STMicroelectronics introduces Stellar P6 automotive MCU for electric vehicle platforms

STMicroelectronics, a global semiconductor leader serving customers across a wide range of electronic applications, has announced the release of new microcontrollers (MCUs) for use in electrified vehicles that will utilize domain-oriented, over-the-air updateable systems and electrified drivetrains. For model year 2024 vehicles, ST's Stellar P automotive MCUs will integrate the new CAN-XL in-car communication standard as vehicles generate, process, and transfer large data flows to support the next generation of electric vehicles. As a result of this technology, the new vehicle platforms are able to handle growing data flows, ensuring that the car operates at its best.

Luca Rodeschini, Automotive and Discrete Vice President, Strategic Business Development and Automotive Processing and RF General Manager, STMicroelectronics said, “The real-time, power-efficient Stellar P6 automotive microcontrollers combine advanced integration of motion-control and energy-management domains with actuation capabilities, ensuring a smooth shift from traditional ICEs/EVs to new drive-traction architectural patterns of software-defined vehicles”.

“As the automotive industry begins work on new vehicle platforms for model-year 2024, ST is ready with the microcontrollers to support development and ease the transition to vehicle production” he further added.

ST's Stellar MCUs are designed to support carmakers and Tier1 suppliers as they migrate to software-defined vehicles. The Stellar series consists of:

Stellar E series delivers fast real-time control and system miniaturization for power conversion applications, such as EVs' onboard charging, DC-DC converters, and traction inverters.

Stellar G series MCUs act as secure data hubs and real-time, safe aggregators of functions within the body domain. Over a broad set of in-car communication protocols, this series provides best-in-class OTA updates and low-power modes.

The Stellar P series of automotive MCUs combines advanced actuation capabilities with powerful function integration. For optimal real-time performance and energy management, Stellar P devices target electric vehicle drivetrain trends and domain-oriented architectures.
