SSAB and Smith Stal partner for fossil-free steel deliveries to Norwegian clientele
SSAB has created two unique steels with virtually zero fossil carbon emissions: SSAB Zero and SSAB Fossil-free steel.
SSAB and Smith Stal from Norway have signed a letter of intent involving future deliveries of fossil-free steel. Together they are building a strong value chain for their Norwegian customers.
Smith Stal is a leading stockist and nationwide distributor in Norway of value-added steels and metals including its own Steel Service Center. The company provides a complete stock of plates, beams, hollow sections, pipes and bars.
“It is a great pleasure for our company that we in the future can deliver SSAB’s fossil-free steel to our customers in Norway. Being the top three among Norwegian steel distributors, we feel a great demand on us when delivering to industry, building and offshore segment,” says Eirik Berg, Director at Smith Stål.

Traditional steel production represents a significant source of global CO2 emissions. By changing the way steel is produced, SSAB aims to cut emissions and create a fossil-free value chain with customers and partners.
SSAB has created two unique steels with virtually zero fossil carbon emissions: SSAB Zero and SSAB Fossil-free steel. SSAB Zero is made from recycled steel and produced with fossil-free electricity and biogas and is available for commercial deliveries since 2023. SSAB Fossil-free steel is made from iron ore with the unique HYBRIT technology, developed by SSAB with mining company LKAB and energy company Vattenfall. Instead of using coal to remove the oxygen from the iron ore to make iron, the HYBRIT technology uses hydrogen produced with fossil-free electricity, thus emitting water instead of CO2. SSAB Fossil-free steel is currently available for pilot deliveries to selected partners.
“I am happy to welcome Smith Stal as a fossil-free steel partner, adding another distribution partner to our very important Norwegian market,” says Matts Nilsson, Head of Sales Sweden and Norway. “Together we are building a strong value chain for our Norwegian customers.”
