SAIC-GM-Wuling expands to Indonesia with new plant

The Indonesian facility, SAIC-GM-Wuling’s first manufacturing site outside China, has an annual capacity of 120,000 vehicles.

SAIC-GM-Wuling, one of GM’s joint ventures with SAIC in China, has started operation of its new facility in Cikarang, Indonesia, on July 11.

With an investment of $700 million, the Indonesian facility is SAIC-GM-Wuling’s first manufacturing site outside China, covering a total area of 600,000 square metres. It has an annual capacity of 120,000 vehicles.

The first product from the plant is the Wuling Confero S MPV. Sales of the model are scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2017 through Wuling dealerships across Indonesia.

Set up in 2002, SAIC-GM-Wuling registered record sales of 2,048,028 vehicles in China last year. GM China has a 44.0 percent stake, SAIC a 50.1 percent stake and Guangxi Automobile Group a 5.9 percent stake in the company. SAIC-GM-Wuling manufactures a range of Wuling brand mini-trucks and minivans, and Baojun brand passenger vehicles.
