Professor Gordon Murray from Gordon Murray Design has fought off competition from across the UK to be nominated for a prestigious national innovation award.

Gordon Murray Design is one of just five companies nominated for the Innovation leading to Productivity Improvements in Innovate UK’s Small Business innovation awards. They also have a chance of winning the best of the best ‘Inspirational innovation’ award.

The awards aim to recognise examples of innovation excellence among the projects funded by Innovate UK. The awards celebrate projects and companies that demonstrate the impact of innovation on business growth and driving the economy, and can inspire others.

Gordon Murray Design is a British visionary design and engineering company with its headquarters in Shalford, Surrey undertaking Automotive and Engineering programmes.

Gordon Murray Design has built a global reputation as one of the ‘finest automotive design teams in the World’ and was established in 2007 to develop an innovative and disruptive manufacturing technology trademarked iStream.

Gordon Murray Design’s first milestone was the T.25 – a proof-of-concept for the futuristic vision of urban mobility (pictured above). When it made its debut in mid-2010, the petrol-powered T.25 instantly redefined traditional weight, footprint, safety, usability and efficiency parameters using Gordon Murray Design’s patented iStream with its innovative use of Formula 1 technology, simplified for cost for the everyday motorist. Together with the all-electric T.27 that followed in mid-2011, the T.25 was central to both the development and validation of GMD’s ground-breaking iStream production process.

The unique approach and truly creative thinking enables Gordon Murray Design to deliver complete car programmes in a highly efficient and innovative way from concept, design, prototype and development through to production ready product.

Commenting on the recognition Professor Gordon Murray said: “We are delighted that the company has been recognised for iStream, an innovative and disruptive manufacturing process.  We have worked very closely with Innovate UK over the years and they have been incredibly supportive”.

Innovate UK chief executive Ruth McKernan said: “Our small business awards showcase the stories behind some of the excellent new innovations that Innovate UK helps to get closer to market every year. They also help Parliamentarians see how vital business-led innovation is to growing the economy and any industrial strategy.  I want to congratulate Professor Gordon Murray on being shortlisted for an award and I’m looking forward to meeting him in Parliament and hopefully sending them back with an award.”

The awards will be presented by Universities and Science minister Jo Johnson MP, and Chief Executive of Innovate UK, Dr Ruth McKernan on October 25th in the House of Commons.

Since 2007 Innovate UK has invested around £1.8 billion in innovation, which has been more than matched by the private sector – returning up to £13.1 billion to the economy. Innovate UK has supported innovation in 7,600 organisations, creating around 55,000 new jobs – more than seven for each company Innovate UK have worked with.
