Mercedes-Benz today unveiled its latest truck engine in Berlin. Compared to its predecessor, the latest generation heavy-duty truck OM 471 engine saves up to 3% fuel, thus reducing operating costs while reducing CO2 emissions.
The OM 471 is part of the most successful platform for heavy trucks engines from Daimler Trucks. The world's cleanest and most advanced engine platform meets the stringent emissions standards in Europe, North America and Japan and the engines operate in both the heavy-duty trucks from Mercedes-Benz as well as in the trucks from Freightliner and Western Star in North America and Fuso in Asia.
Thus far, these heavy-duty truck engines have been installed about 250,000 times worldwide, including more than 100,000 times in Mercedes-Benz trucks. Mercedes-Benz Trucks has invested 60 million euros for the development of the engine platform. Stefan Buchner, Head of Mercedes-Benz Trucks, says: "Our aim is to help shape the future of road transport. The latest generation of our successful engine OM 471 provides the proof. Because of its higher efficiency of up to 3% fuel economy benefit our customers and the environment. "
The efficiency progress results from several internal engine changes. Improvements in fuel injection, a higher compression ratio, a new turbocharger and a reduced rate of exhaust gas recirculation ensure the reduction of fuel consumption. In average use with a mileage of 130,000 km / year, a Mercedes-Benz Actros with the new engine consumed about 1,100 fewer litres of diesel and emitted about three metric tons less CO2.
