Maruti Suzuki produces 2 million units in a year for the first time
While almost 60% have been manufactured at the Haryana plant, 40% have rolled out from the Suzuki Motor Gujarat facility. Of the company’s 17 models, the Baleno, Fronx, Ertiga, Wagon R and Brezza are the top five manufactured vehicles during calendar year 2024.
Passenger vehicle market leader Maruti Suzuki India has announced a production milestone of 2 million vehicles in a calendar year for the first time in its history. This makes Maruti Suzuki the only OEM in India to achieve this significant milestone in passenger vehicle production. With this achievement, Maruti Suzuki has also become the first among Suzuki Motor Corporation’s global automobile manufacturing facilities to reach this landmark.
The two-millionth vehicle to be rolled out this year from the production line at the company's manufacturing facility in Manesar, Haryana, was an Ertiga MPV. Of the two million vehicles, almost 60% have been manufactured in Haryana and 40% in Gujarat (at the Suzuki Motor Gujarat plant). The Baleno, Fronx, Ertiga, Wagon R and Brezza are the top five manufactured vehicles during calendar year 2024.
Commenting on the milestone production this year, Hisashi Takeuchi, managing director and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India, said, “The two million production milestone is a testament to India’s manufacturing potential and our dedication to ‘Make in India’ initiative. This achievement reflects our commitment, alongside our supplier and dealer partners, to driving economic growth, supporting nation building, and making India’s automobile industry self-reliant and globally competitive. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our customers, employees, and value chain partners for their continued support and for being an integral part of this historic journey.”
Current capacity of 2.35 million units to be expanded to 4 million
Maruti Suzuki currently operates three manufacturing facilities: two in Haryana (Gurgaon and Manesar) and one in Gujarat (Hansalpur). Together, these facilities have a combined annual production capability of 2.35 million units.
In anticipation of growing demand for automobiles in India and worldwide, the Company plans to expand its annual production capacity to 4 million units. For this, it is setting up a new greenfield manufacturing facility in Kharkhoda, Haryana. Construction work at the Kharkhoda site is progressing as per plan and the first plant with annual capacity of 250,000 units is expected to be operational in 2025. Once fully operational, the Kharkhoda facility will have a planned capacity of a million units per year.
Additionally, Maruti Suzuki is planning another greenfield facility with an annual capacity of a million units and is in the process of identifying a suitable location for this new facility.
ON TRACK FOR TOP EXPORTER TITLE FOR FOURTH FISCAL IN A ROW
The Fronx compact SUV, whose exports began in July 2023, is already among the top export models along with the Jmny, Baleno, Dzire and Swift.
The increase in manufacturing capacity will prove useful to Maruti Suzuki, which accounts for almost 40% of total passenger vehicle exports from India. The car, SUV and MPV manufacturer has been riding a wave of export demand and, in the first eight months of FY2025, has shipped a total of 208,411 units, up 18% YoY (April-November 2023: 176,070 units).
This export total is already 74% of its record export sales of 280,712 units in FY2024 and ensures that the company is well set to retain the title of ‘India’s top PV exporter’ for the fourth fiscal year in a row. Maruti Suzuki's top export models include the Fronx, Jimny, Baleno, Dzire and Swift. Its ky export markets Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
In November this year, the company achieved an export milestone of three million vehicles since it began its export journey in 1986. The company reached the million export milestone in FY2013, with the two million milestone coming up around nine years later, in FY2021. The progression from two million to three million exports took only three years and nine months, marking this fastest million milestone in the company's export history.
