UN Global Compact has announced that Anand Mahindra, chairman of the Mahindra Group, has been accorded membership to its Board, appointed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Mr Mahindra joins more than 20 other members on the UN Global Compact Board, which is chaired by the UN Secretary-General. Dr Musimbi Kanyoro, president and CEO, Global Fund for Women, is the other newly appointed Board member.

“We are pleased to welcome these two new members to the Board of the United Nations Global Compact,” said Lise Kingo, CEO and executive director of the UN Global Compact. “Dr. Kanyoro and Mr. Mahindra bring with them a wealth of experience and insight that will help guide the Compact as we work to maximise impact on the road to 2030.”

The UN Global Compact Board plays an important role in shaping the strategy and policy of the initiative, which acts as the United Nations flagship for responsible business action. Designed as a multi-stakeholder body, the Board provides ongoing strategic and policy advice for the initiative. Board members are considered champions who are willing and able to advance the mission of the UN Global Compact. They act in a personal, honorary and unpaid capacity.

UN Global Compact's vision statement says that it "aims to mobilise a global movement of sustainable companies and stakeholders to create the world we want." To make this happen, the UN Global Compact supports companies to:

- Do business responsibly by aligning their strategies and operations with Ten Principles on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption; and

- Take strategic actions to advance broader societal goals, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with an emphasis on collaboration and innovation.

As the world approaches the fourth anniversary of the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, the UN Global Compact Board will be instrumental in helping to bring business to the table in support of Agenda 2030.
