With apex industry body SIAM releasing the wholesale numbers for the first quarter of FY2027, it’s amply clear that the Indian passenger vehicle (PV) industry is heading towards another record fiscal year. In FY2026, PV sales scaled a new high of 4.64 million units, including 3.10 million utility vehicles. Now, in the current fiscal, PV dispatches (1.27 million units) in the April-June 2026 quarter have jumped 26% YoY (Q1 FY2026: 1.01 million units). While the GST 2.0 revival in demand for hatchbacks and sedans continues – 367,549 units, up 21% vs 303,129 units in Q1 FY2026 (down 11% YoY) – it is the utility vehicle (UV) segment that continues to be the bulwark of the market.
The 861,918 UVs sold in Q1 FY2027 are a handsome 29% increase (Q1 FY2026: 670,120 units) and command a 68% share of total PV wholesales, a 2-percentage-point increase over the 66% they had in Q1 FY2026. Within the UV category, which is bifurcated into compact SUVs, midsize SUVs and MPVs, the compact SUV sub-segment remains the most popular.
Record compact SUV sales (397,609 units) contributed 24% to the highest-ever UV dispatches of 861,918 units in Q1. However, due to rising demand for midsize SUVs, their share has dropped to 46%.
In Q1 FY2027, the 11 compact SUV manufacturers, which market around 20 models—a fourth of the 80 utility vehicles sold in India—clocked wholesales of 397,609 units, up 24% YoY (Q1 FY2026: 319,734 units), which constitutes 27% of their entire FY2026 sales of 1.47 million units.
However, on a macro level, given the growing demand for midsize SUVs, the share of the compact SUV segment in the overall utility vehicle pie is reducing. As the data table for the past six fiscal-year Q1s reveals, the compact SUV share, which was 53% in Q1 FY2022, stands reduced to 46% in Q1 FY2027.
A quick look at the midsize SUV segment’s sales in Q1 FY2027 shows that combined sales of the top 10 models were 285,368 units, marking a strong 31% YoY increase. These top 10 midsize SUVs comprise the Mahindra Scorpio, Hyundai Creta, Maruti Victoris, Kia Seltos, Mahindra XUV 7XO, Toyota Hyryder, Maruti Grand Vitara, Tata Sierra, Mahindra BEVs and the Mahindra Thar Roxx. New models are entering this segment consistently. While Renault India recently rolled out the Duster, Nissan India has, earlier this month, launched the Tekton.
Tata Punch, sold with petrol, CNG and electric powertrains, has sold 60,321 units in Q1 FY2027, up 67% YoY, and accounts for 52% of Tata Motors’ 115,882 compact SUV sales.
TATA PUNCH IS BEST-SELLING SUV IN FIRST QUARTER OF FY2027
Even as Maruti Suzuki has opened bookings for the facelifted Brezza ahead of its launch on July 24, Tata Motors has increased its grip on the compact SUV market. As per SIAM’s wholesale numbers, the manufacturer of the Nexon and Punch sold 115,882 units in Q1 FY2027, up 52% YoY (Q1 FY2026: 76,230 units).
As a result of its strong performance, Tata Motors’ share of compact SUV sales has jumped to 29% from 24%, and is two percentage points higher than the 27% these two models had in FY2026. While the Punch (60,321 units, up 67%) is India’s best-selling SUV/UV in Q1, the Nexon is ranked second (55,561 units, up 38%), being just 37 units ahead of the Maruti Ertiga MPV.
What continues to drive numbers for these two models is Tata’s multi-powertrain strategy spread across petrol, diesel, CNG and electric power. The company is also benefiting from the ongoing consumer shift to EVs due to the recent (from May 14 onwards) increase in petrol, diesel and CNG prices.
Tata Motors continued to dominate the compact SUV market, selling 115,882 units with 52% growth and a 29% share. Maruti Suzuki (91,701 units) and Mahindra (62,737 units) took the next two ranks.
Maruti Suzuki, the overall UV segment leader, with 91,701 units, up 6% YoY, sold 24,181 fewer compact SUVs than Tata Motors in the first quarter. Its sales comprise the Fronx (52,650 units, up 39%), Brezza (37,488 units, down 20%) and Jimny (1,563 units, up 5%). With Brezza numbers down, presumably due to buyers awaiting the new model, Maruti Suzuki’s share of the compact SUV market has fallen to 23% from 27% in Q1 FY2026.
Mahindra & Mahindra, whose portfolio in this category comprises the Bolero, Thar 3-door, XUV 3X0 and XUV400, clocked sales of 62,737 units, up 12% YoY. The Bolero comprised the bulk of the Q1 sales, followed by the 3X0 (24,297 units, up 7%), Thar 3-door and the XUV400 e-SUV. This gives M&M a segment share in Q1 FY2027 of 16% versus 18% a year ago.
Fourth-ranked Hyundai Motor India has seen strong gains in Q1. The 57,755 units, comprising the Venue (34,910 units, up 56%) and the Exter (22,845 units, up 33%), represent a 46% YoY increase (Q1 FY2026: 39,519 units). This sees Hyundai’s compact SUV share rise to 14.52% from 12.35% in the year-ago period.
Kia India dispatched 31,780 compact SUVs in the first quarter of the current fiscal. This marks a 10% YoY increase (Q1 FY2026: 28,800 units), which is the result of one model’s strong sales buffering the other’s sharp decline. While the Sonet (29,475 units) has registered 29% YoY growth, the Syros (2,305 units) has witnessed a 62% YoY sales decline. As a result of the Syros dragging down Kia’s Q1 sales, the company’s compact SUV share is marginally down to 8% from 9% a year ago. On July 15, Kia India revealed the Syros EV, which has an ARAI-certified range of 526km and will be offered with BaaS as a sales option. This strategic move to introduce the Syros EV should give a fillip to overall sales of Kia India’s second compact SUV.
Sixth-ranked Skoda Auto India is among the three OEMs that have only a single compact SUV in their UV portfolio. The Kylaq, which was launched 18 months ago in January 2025, sold 11,571 units in the April-June 2026 period, down 14% YoY (Q1 FY2026: 13,509 units). This sees Skoda’s compact SUV share slip to 3% from 4% a year ago. Since its launch, the Kylaq has sold over 70,000 units in India and has helped re-energise the Czech OEM.
Nissan Motor India, which expanded its UV line-up with the Gravite joining the Magnite, doubled its wholesales in Q1 to 9,157 units. The model-wise split for the 108% YoY increase (Q1 FY2026: 4,396 units) is Magnite (4,607 units, up 5%) and Gravite (4,550 units).
Renault India, with 7,750 units sold and 26% growth, maintained its 2% share of the compact SUV market. While the Triber accounted for 5,678 units (up 34%), the Kiger sold 2,072 units (up 8%).
Toyota Kirloskar Motor, which has a single product in this segment, sold 7,529 units of the Urban Cruiser Taisor.
While 10th-ranked Stellantis India’s Q1 sales of 1,746 units of the C3 and e-C3 were up 137% YoY, Force Motors sold one Gurkha in the past three months.
