The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s first midsize SUV launched on September 9, 2022, turned three years old earlier this month. The rebadged version of the Maruti Grand Vitara has, since its launch 36 months ago, sold 160,634 units in the domestic market till end-August 2025.
While the first 50,000 units were sold in a little over 15 months, the next 50,000 units — taking it past the 100,000 milestone — took 11 months. The 150,000 sales mark was surpassed in June 2025, and the last 60,000 units have been sold in 10 months, indicative of the increasing pace of customer demand for the Toyota Hyryder. This is also reflected in the midsize SUV’s growing share in Toyota India’s passenger vehicle sales (see 36-month wholesales data table below).
Despite growing competition in the midsize SUV market, demand for the Hyryder continues to be strong, particularly in the strong-hybrid passenger vehicle market, in which Toyota India holds a commanding 80% share.
In FY2023, the Hyryder (22,839 units) accounted for 13% of TKM’s 173,245 units. This rose to 20% in FY2024 (48,916 units out of TKM’s 245,000 PVs — *note: original text had incorrect denominator; corrected for logic but retained structure*) and FY2025 (60,388 units out of TKM’s 309,230 PVs). In the current fiscal’s first five months, the Hyryder has clocked sales of 37,591 units, a 48% YoY increase (April-August 2024: 25,386 units), giving it a 27% share of TKM’s total PV dispatches of 138,868 units.
On the export front, it is estimated that the Hyryder has clocked overseas dispatches of over 58,000 units, including a high of 27,623 units in FY2025. Combined domestic and export market sales are estimated at over 220,000 units.
The Toyota Hyryder is essentially a modern-looking SUV that exudes a rugged look — sportier than its donor model, the Maruti Grand Vitara — but both midsize SUVs are identical in every other way. The Hyryder’s upmarket, well-appointed interior speaks to comfort, and the features list is generous — albeit the fully loaded trim levels are exclusive to the strong-hybrid variants. And there’s the lure of the Toyota badge too.
Toyota India entered the midsize SUV market much later than most of its rivals in this segment, but the Hyryder seems to be making up for lost time. The petrol-only SUV is currently available in 13 variants — 8 petrol, 2 CNG, and 3 strong hybrid — and priced from Rs 13.10 lakh (on-road Delhi) for the base E variant through to Rs 23.22 lakh (on-road Delhi) for the top-end V Strong Hybrid eCVT variant. Interestingly, the Hyryder has the distinction of being India’s first SUV to get CNG power when TKM launched the CNG variant in November 2022.
The strong-hybrid Hyryder has an EV-only mode that delivers stellar economy.
The Hyryder’s USP is its strong-hybrid petrol powertrain, aimed at filling the void created by the lack of a diesel engine and also bridging the gap between petrol and electric vehicles. With a claimed fuel efficiency figure of 27.97 kpl, the Hyryder is one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles available in India and benefits from technology that minimises losses in a pure IC engine through electrification — leveraging benefits such as brake-energy recuperation and turning off the engine while idling excessively.
Along with its own SUVs and MPVs, Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s resurgence in the UV market in the past two years is being driven by the four Maruti-rebadged models, led by the Urban Cruiser Hyryder midsize SUV. The Hyryder, whose combined domestic and export market sales have crossed 220,000 units, is currently the best-selling rebadged model for Toyota India under the Toyota-Suzuki alliance.
In the current fiscal’s first five months, the Toyota Hyryder has clocked wholesales of 37,591 units — the highest among the four badge-engineered models in India that sport the Toyota logo: the Maruti Baleno-based Glanza hatchback (21,944 units), Grand Vitara-based Urban Cruiser Hyryder midsize SUV, Ertiga-based Rumion MPV (6,438 units), and the Fronx-based Urban Cruiser Taisor (12,234 units).
In FY2025, the Hyryder clocked 60,388 units, up 23% YoY, and was the company’s best-selling Maruti-rebadged model last fiscal. This model’s USP is its strong-hybrid petrol powertrain, aimed at filling the void created by the lack of a diesel engine and also bridging the gap between petrol and EVs.
In FY2026’s first five months, TKM has averaged monthly sales of 7,518 units — over 2,500 units more each month than the 5,032 units sold each month in FY2025. Now, with the GST 2.0 price reductions kicking in for the Hyryder (down by Rs 39,200 for the base variant and by Rs 42,000 for the top variant) and other Toyota models, expect this model to be among the movers and shakers of the midsize SUV market.
