Tata Motors, currently ranked the No. 2 passenger vehicle manufacturer in CY2026 YTD after Maruti Suzuki and ahead of Mahindra & Mahindra, registered two new volume highlights in August 2026. Last month saw Tata EV wholesales (factory dispatches to showrooms) hit a new high of 16,549 units, up 94% YoY (August 205: 8,540 units).
This strong showing comes on the back of month-on-month growth right since May 2026 (10,517 units) when it first surpassed the 10,000-unit wholesales mark, June (14,800 EVs, up 41% MoM), July (15,217 EVs, up 3% MoM) and August (16,549 EVs, up 9% MoM) which have each been standout months. As a result, cumulative Tata EV wholesales in the first eight months of CY2026 at 93,164 units have jumped 95% YoY (January-August 2025: 47,831 units) and have surpassed the CY2025 (81,125 units) total.
Tata EV’s wholesale performance is in tandem with its retail sales (deliveries to customers) of 13,070 zero-emission cars and SUVs in August and 85,380 e-PVs in January-August 2026, including a monthly high of 14,310 units delivered to customers in July. As the eight-month e-PV wholesale data table (below) depicts, the company has accelerated its EV dispatches since May 2026 to meet the surge in demand, following the hikes in petrol and diesel as well as CNG prices in mid-May as well as the growing consumer transition to e-mobility.
Tata EV Penetration Crosses 25% for the First Time
As a result of the sustained MoM growth since the past four months, the EV penetration rate in Tata Motors’ overall PV sales continues to rise. In August, the 16,549 EVs had a 25% share of the 65,253 Tata PVs, which marks the first time that monthly EV penetration has crossed the 25% level. In January 2026, when Tata Motors hit its highest monthly PV sales (70,022 PVs), the EV share was 13% (9,052 units) which indicates the speedier demand for Tata EVs as compared to its ICE models. For the first eight months of this year, the 93,164 EV wholesales give Tata EV an 18% penetration level versus 13% in the January-August 2025 period.
Tata Motors' Seven-Model EV Portfolio Leads the Market
Amongst the mainstream PV manufacturers in India, Tata Motors continues to have the largest EV portfolio. It has seven models comprising the Tiago EV, Nexon EV, Punch EV, Harrier EV, Curvv EV, Tigor EV/Xpres-T (for fleet buyers), and the recently launched Sierra EV. Second-ranked e-PV OEM Mahindra & Mahindra currently has four models: BE 6, XEV 9e, XEV 9S and the XUV400.
Nexon EV, Tiago EV and Sierra EV Drive the Festive Season Push
The Nexon EV continues to be Tata EV’s volume driver, but the updated Tiago EV and the Punch EV have drawn a large percentage of first-time EV buyers, particularly in the wake of the petrol-diesel-CNG price hikes. The recently launched Sierra EV has given even more ammo to Tata’s e-PV portfolio which includes the Harrier EV, Curvv EV and Tigor EV. That Tata EV is gearing up for the festive season can be seen from the fact that it despatched 16,549 e-PVs to its showrooms last month, up 94% YoY, and its highest-ever e-PV wholesales to date.
Tata Motors on Track for Record 700,000 PV Sales in CY2026
Tata Motors vs Mahindra & Mahindra: The Battle for No. 2 Spot
The strong growth in its EV sales is also helping Tata Motors stay ahead of an aggressive Mahindra & Mahindra. While Tata Motors has clocked 8-month wholesales of 507,922 units (up 45% YoY), M&M’s factory dispatches in January-August 2026 are 477,850 units (up 22% YoY). Expect the ongoing battle between the No. 2 and No. 3 players in India’s passenger vehicle market to turn more intense in the coming months.
Eight months into CY2026, Tata Motors is 30,072 PVs ahead of Mahindra & Mahindra (477,850 SUVs, up 22% YoY). Nevertheless, what’s amply clear is that both manufacturers are headed for record sales in CY2026. Tata Motors, which registered record PV wholesales of 578,771 units in CY2025, is well set to surpass both the 600,000 and 700,000 annual sales milestones for the first time. And,
M&M, which sold 625,603 SUVs in CY2025 to outsell Tata Motors last year, is also likely to hit the 700,000 SUVs sales milestone in CY2026.
