The Tata Altroz is set to drive past the 300,000-unit sales milestone in the Indian market soon. As per SIAM wholesales data, Tata Motors’ premium hatchback has clocked cumulative wholesales of 296,425 units till end-April 2025. Expect the minuscule gap of 3,575 units to be bridged in early June 2025, as a result of the carmaker launching the face-lifted Altroz on May 22.
The facelifted Tata Altroz has an introductory price of Rs 689,000, which constitutes a Rs 24,000 increase over the current model’s starting price of Rs 665,000. Available in four trim levels (Smart, Pure, Creative, Accomplished), the new Altroz continues with the 1.2-litre 88hp petrol with 5-speed manual and 6-speed dual-clutch auto transmission and 74hp CNG, and 1.5-litre 90hp diesel engines as before. A key difference is that the new Altroz’s petrol variant gets a 5-speed AMT option (priced from Rs 829,000 through to Rs 965,000) aimed at drawing aspirational buyers seeking modern features within a budget, as stated by Shailesh Chandra, managing director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles.
The snazzy Altroz, which now looks better than even before, gets a significant number of exterior and interior changes, along with more features and safety kit. With bookings opening for the new Altroz on June 2, expect demand to once again pick up for the stylish Tata hatchback.
Since its launch over five years ago on January 22, 2020, the Tata Altroz, which has options of petrol, diesel and CNG powertrains, has contributed 13% to Tata Motors’ total passenger vehicle sales of 2.33 million units and 38% of its passenger car sales till April 2025.
Despite being launched just a couple of months before the Covid-19 pandemic struck, the Altroz did well to sell 60,379 units in FY2021 and 62,247 units in FY2022. The car’s best fiscal year to date has been FY2024 with sales of 70,162 units, up 21% YoY (FY2023: 57,819 units), when it was the second best-selling hatchback for Tata Motors after the Tiago (85,478 units).
However, in FY2025, demand for the Altroz fell sharply by 50% to 35,187 units, as it also did for its siblings Tiago (69,222 units, down 19%) and the Tigor (16,509 units, down 38%). In FY2025, Tata Motors’ passenger car sales fell 34% YoY to 120,918 (FY2024: 182,537 units). In comparison, Tata Motors sold 432,667 SUVs, up 11% (FY2024: 388,418 UVs) in tune with the utility vehicle industry’s record sales of 2.79 million units, up 11% YoY.
While the decline in demand for the current Altroz can be attributed to its five-year-old status, it is also a fact that the overall passenger car segment – hatchbacks and sedans – registered a 12.6% decline to 13,53,287 units in FY2025 with segment leaders Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor India also witnessing their sales decline amid the ongoing shift to UVs.
The Altroz has its share of firsts. It is the first Tata car to use the ALFA (Agile Light Flexible Advanced) architecture, was the 36th made-in-India car to be crash-tested by Global NCAP (under the previous protocol) and became the company’s second – after the Tata Nexon – and India’s second GNCAP five-star rated car. The Altroz CNG debuted the carmaker's new dual-cylinder setup for CNG tanks and was, at the time, the first CNG-powered hatchback in India to sport a sunroof. It also remains one of the nicest looking hatchbacks in India, be it when standing still or out on the road. And its sporty avatar, the Altroz Racer looks just that.
