India Top 10: Passenger Vehicle & Two-Wheeler Sales in May

PASSENGER VEHICLES

The Maruti Alto continued to lead the sales charts in May, recording a 31 percent jump in sales to 22,595 units. The Swift grabbed the second spot with 17,195 units. Meanwhile, the Dzire fell from the top spot to the third clocking in 16,473 units. The Wagon R and Stingray sold 12,467 units combined.

The new entrant in the Top 10 list was the Celerio, which posted a 16 percent rise to 6,653 units from a month ago and 14 percent up from May 2014. Sales of the Celerio surpassed those of the Hyundai Eon, which sold 6,449 units.

Maruti Suzuki India has effectively stamped its power on the Top 10 list, with five of its cars dominating sales. Hyundai Motor India is the next best with three cars, all of them hatchbacks.

In the premium hatch segment, the Hyundai Elite i20 sold 10,334 units in May 2015. The car has crossed the 10,000 unit sales mark for a fourth consecutive month selling 55,376 units since January 2015.

Also, in a scant 14 months since its launch, the Elite i20 has driven past the 100,000 unit sales landmark in the domestic market. Till end-May 2015, it had clocked total sales of 100,506 units – 51,326 of them petrol and 49,180 diesel variants. This clearly points to the return of petrol in the car market as a result of the tightening price gap between the two fuels.

In the midsize segment, the Hyundai Xcent sold 4,871 units in May.

In the upper mid-size segment, the Skoda Rapid sold 1,029 units, up over 30 percent from last year as well as the previous month. In the UV segment, Mahindra & Mahindra's long-serving warhorse, the Bolero sold a steady 7,569 units while the Maruti Omni sold 6,445 units.

Meanwhile, with concerns about a tepic monsoon abating, industry is keeping its fingers crossed that passenger car sales will soon see an uptick.

MOTORCYCLES

The top four places in motorcycles sales for May remain unchanged as Hero MotoCorp's Splendor, Passion and HF Deluxe and Honda's CB Shine stick to their places. Although Hero Passion sales have fallen considerably in May 2015 compared to the previous period, it manages to hold on to the second position.

Bajaj Platina loses ground in the list, falling behind three places to no. 9, which helps Hero MotoCorp's Glamour to jump to no.6. TVS Sport is replaced by the TVS Apache at the bottom of the list.

The highlight of May 2015 is the Bajaj CT's entry, which makes heads turn by directly jumping into the fifth spot.

SCOOTERS

Scooter sales continue the trend of the top places remaining unchanged as Honda Activa, Hero Maestro and TVS Jupiter consolidate their top three positions.

However, Honda's flagship scooter Activa manages to considerably increase its lead over the rest of the models. Interestingly, there are no new entrants in the top 10 scooter sales for May 2015 as the rest of the players shuffle their places to complete the list.
