Renault Duster and Nissan Tekton Post Their Lowest Monthly Sales in August

Launched four months apart this year, the new Renault Duster and the Nissan Tekton which marked the two automaker’s return to the midsize SUV market in India have registered their lowest monthly wholesales in August 2026. Both midsize SUVs share the same mechanical underpinnings, identical turbo-petrol engine options, and are based on the Renault-Nissan CMF-B modular platform. The Tekton is essentially the badge-engineered Renault Duster and shares the Duster’s platform, powertrains and several components and is built on the same assembly line at the Renault–Nissan Alliance plant at Oragadam, near Chennai.

As per the model-wise August wholesales numbers released by apex industry body SIAM, the third-generation Renault Duster sold 406 units last month, down 21% on July (512 units). This is the new Duster’s lowest monthly wholesales since its March 2026 launch albeit the model, along with sustained demand for the Triber MPV, has helped revive overall passenger vehicle demand for the French car and SUV manufacturer’s passenger vehicle arm in India. Nevertheless, from a monthly high of 2,359 units in April when the Duster accounted for a 44% share of Renault India’s 5,413 units, August’s 406 units see the Duster’s share whittle down to just 14 percent.

Priced from Rs 10.49 lakh to Rs 18.49 lakh (ex-showroom) across five variants, the Duster is powered by 1.0-litre turbo-petrol and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines, with a strong 1.8-litre petrol-electric hybrid powertrain slated to join the line-up by November 2026. The Duster’s primary rivals include the midsize SUV market leader Hyundai Creta, Maruti Victoris, Kia Seltos, Tata Sierra, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Honda Elevate, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun.

Given the sizeable fan following for the first-generation Renault Duster, which clocked sales of 199,871 units but exited India after a 10-year run, it was expected that buyers would line up for the third-gen MY2026 Duster. That hope seems to be belied, as SIAM’s six-month wholesale data depicts. The difference between the Duster launched in 2012 and the MY2026 model is that the former had a diesel engine option – a 1.5-litre powerplant with 84hp and 108hp outputs – which was a key contributor to the model’s huge success in India. Meanwhile, the midsize SUV competition has increased significantly since then.

The lowest monthly dispatches have resulted in the Duster dropping down the ranks in Renault India’s four-model passenger vehicle portfolio. From being the company’s best-selling model from April, when it outsold the Triber MPV, through to July, the Duster’s ranking has dropped to No. 4. Last month’s 406 units put the Duster last after the Triber (1,536 units), Kiger (474 units) and Kwid (426 units).

Factory dispatches of both the Duster (406 units) and Tekton midsize SUVs to showrooms across India have hit a new low in August.

Nissan Tekton Sells 491 Units in August, Down 71% on July Dispatches

Launched on July 9, the Nissan Tekton has sold a total of 2,161 units in July-August 2026. However, August sales (491 units) were down sharply by 71% month-on-month (July 2026: 1,670 units). In July, its first month of dispatches to showrooms, the Tekton was Nissan Motor India’s No. 1 model with a 37% share of the OEM’s 4,518 passenger vehicles, ahead of the Magnite (1,462 units) and new Gravite (1,386 units) compact SUVs.

In August, the Tekton (491 units) dropped two positions to be the No. 3 model, ranked below the Magnite (1,495 units) and Gravite (1,440 units). As a result, the Tekton’s share of Nissan India’s PV dispatches dropped to 14% – the same share as the Duster has in Renault India’s PV wholesales in August (see model-wise wholesales data table above).

The six-variant Tekton’s price starts at Rs 10.49 lakh for the base Visia T160 MT variant and goes up to Rs 18.59 lakh for the top Tekna Plus T280 DCT variant (ex-showroom). Like its platform sibling Duster, the Tekton rivals the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, Honda Elevate, Skoda Kushaq, Toyota Hyryder, Tata Sierra and Volkswagen Taigun.

Under the bonnet, the Tekton can be had with two turbo-petrol engines: a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder and a 1.3-litre 4-cylinder. The Tekton 1.0 turbo gets only a 6-speed manual gearbox, while the 1.3 turbo additionally offers a 6-speed wet-clutch DCT.

While Renault India has exported 1,457 Dusters to overseas markets between April-August 2026, Nissan Motor India has shipped 1,340 Tektons in just two months including 1,334 units in August.

Ultra-Competitive Midsize Market Difficult to Break into, Exports Offer Hope

Like the compact SUV segment, which accounts for the bulk of the utility vehicle market, the midsize SUV segment is also hitting new highs. What’s common to both segments is that only the fittest can survive in what is both an ultra-competitive and unforgiving marketplace.

The tepid customer response to both the Duster and the Tekton models in the domestic market can be put down to Renault and Nissan’s much-delayed return to the midsize SUV segment, which is now a vastly different marketplace. There are over 20 models, including eight EVs and some hybrids, fighting tooth and nail for a slice of the booming sales led by the Hyundai Creta, Mahindra Scorpio and Kia Seltos.

Furthermore, adding to the current customer concern about E20 petrol, which has seen the share of petrol vehicles decline, both Renault and Nissan have to accept that nearly all the midsize SUV rivals to the Duster and Tekton are backed by larger dealer networks, broader powertrain options, as well as stronger brand power.

Exports of the made-in-India Renault Duster and Nissan Tekton are another story altogether. Renault India, which began exporting the Duster in June, has shipped a total of 1,457 Dusters to overseas markets between April-August 2026, helping the company achieve 102% YoY growth in PV exports to 10,499 units. Meanwhile, Nissan Motor India has exported 1,340 Tektons, including 1,334 units in August, as its first batch of overseas shipments to South Africa, Nepal and Bhutan.
