If India’s passenger vehicle segment saw a decline of 1.37% in wholesales of 10,11,882 units in April-June 2025, it’s also because bellwether and market leader Maruti Suzuki India witnessed a tepid first quarter. The company’s factories dispatched a total of 393,572 cars, sedan, SUVs and MPVs to its dealers, down 6% YoY (Q1 FY2026: 419,114 passenger vehicles).
Of the 17 passenger vehicle models in Maruti Suzuki’s portfolio, only 7 models – Dzire, Ertiga, Brezza, Swift, Fronx, Jimny and Invicto – have seen their sales increase year on year (see comprehensive data table at the bottom of this analysis) in the April-June 2025 period.
Maruti Suzuki’s wholesales in all three sub-segments – cars, utility vehicles and vans – are down YoY in the first quarter. While 198,599 hatchbacks and sedans sold are down 10% YoY (Q1 FY2025: 222,193 units), UV dispatches at 161,868 units are down albeit marginally by 0.77% (Q1 FY2025; 163,130 UVs) and the 33,105 Eeco vans sold are down 2% YoY (Q1 FY2025: 33,791 units).
Baleno-based Fronx, the best-selling Nexa SUV in FY2025, is currently the No. 1 Nexa model with 37,744 units in the April-June 2025 quarter.
FRONX TOPS SALES OF THE EIGHT-MODEL NEXA PACK
Of the eight passenger vehicles sold from the premium Nexa retail channel, only the Fronx, Jimny and Invicto find themselves in positive territory in the first quarter of FY2026. As the wholesales data table above reveals, all the other five models are in the red in the first quarter of the current fiscal.
The Baleno-based Fronx compact SUV, which came very close to being Nexa Model No. 1 in FY2025, has sold 37,744 units, up 3% YoY. The Fronx, which became the first Nexa SUV to achieve 300,000 sales in March this year, was the best-selling Nexa-retailed SUV in FY2025 (166,216 units).
The stylish Baleno hatchback, which has sold 33,764 units in April-June 2025, is down 19% YoY as a result of selling 8,022 fewer units year on year.
The Grand Vitara midsize SUV takes third rank with sales of 19,179 units, down 29% YoY (Q1 FY2025: 27,066 units). The growing competition in its segment had seen the Grand Vitara register marginal 2% growth in FY2025 with 123,946 units, which is a marginal 2% YoY increase (FY2024: 121,169 units) and just 2,777 units more year on year.
The XL6 MPV takes fourth position with 9,658 units, down 20% YoY (Q1 FY2025: 10,073 units) and is followed by the Ignis hatchback which sold 5,275 units, down by a similar 20% YoY (Q1 FY2025: 6,555 units).
The Ciaz, which is the sole sedan in the Nexa pack, is ranked sixth with 1,807 units, down 17% YoY (Q1 FY2025: 2,169 units).
The Jimny SUV, at No. 7 in the Nexa sales ladder-board, registered wholesales of 1,484 units, up 47% YoY.
The Invicto MPV, which is produced by Toyota Kirloskar Motor for Maruti Suzuki under the global Suzuki-Toyota alliance, wraps up the Nexa list with 688 units, up 34% YoY, albeit on a low year-ago base.
In FY2025, Maruti Suzuki’s Nexa portfolio had sold 543,050 passenger vehicles and surpassed the half-a-million milestone for the second fiscal in a row. And it also clocked its best UV wholesales (340,049 UVs, up 5% on FY2024’s 322.643 UVs) to drive past the cumulative 1-million milestone (10,06,480 units).
