While the Maruti Ertiga sold a best-ever 190,974 units, the Toyota Innova, particularly the Hycross, was bought by 107,204 buyers. Other standout MPVs in FY2025 were the Toyota Rumion, the MG Windsor EV and the luxurious, high-priced Kia Carnival and Toyota Vellfire.

That the utility vehicle (UV) segment in India continues to register its best-ever numbers fiscal after fiscal and increased its share of the overall passenger vehicle sales of 4.30 million units to a new high of 65% in FY2025 is thanks to each of the three sub-segments – compact SUVs, midsize SUVs and MPVs – registering strong double-digit YoYgrowth.
FY2025’s 2.79 million UVs are an increase of 11% YoY (FY2024: 2.52 million units). While compact SUVs sold a record 1.38 million units and accounted for a near-50% share of UV sales, demand for midsize SUVs is also on the upswing. What is also drawing industry’s attention is the growth of the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) market which accounted for around 11% of the passenger vehicle market in India in FY2025.
The calling card of the MPV segment, among a host of factors in a value-conscious market like India, is the high level of practicality, the ability to transport seven people and their luggage in comfort, and the fact that more and more car-owning families are taking the road to their holidays across the country. Let’s take a quick look at the Top 10 MPVs in FY2025.
No. 1 – Maruti Ertiga: 190,974 units, up 28%
Maruti Suzuki India's first crack at the MPV segment continues to win over buyers, and has been India’s No. 1 MPV for the past six fiscals. In FY2025, the Ertiga, which is sold with petrol and CNG powertrains, sold 190,974 units, up 27% YoY (FY2024: 149,757 units). This is its best-ever fiscal year performance, making it the best-selling utility vehicle for Maruti Suzuki and India’s third best-selling UV in FY2025 after the Tata Punch and the Hyundai Creta.
Year-on-year, the Ertiga sold an additional 41,217 units in FY2025, which speaks volumes for the demand this popular family mover continues to command. In FY2025, Maruti Suzuki sold 720,186 UVs, up 11% YoY (FY2024: 642,296 UVs) with the Ertiga accounting for 26% of that total. In fact, it missed out on being the company’s No. 1 passenger vehicle model by just 7,477 units with the Maruti Wagon R (198,451 units) winning that accolade.
No. 2 – Toyota Innova Crysta / Hycross: 107,204 units, up 9%
The Innova MPV – Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s best-selling product – sold 107,204 units, up 9% YoY (FY2024: 98,180 units). Sold in two variants, the Crysta and Hycross, customer demand for the Innova Hycross (hybrid) has been particularly strong, which has helped accelerate sales for this popular people transporter.
Toyota India hit its best-ever sales in FY2025: 309,000-plus units and the Innova has been a key growth driver, along with the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Fortuner midsie SUVS, Taisor compact SUV and the Rumion MPV.
No. 3 – Kia Carens: 64,609 units, up 2%
The high-on-space and comfort Carens MPV, with FY2025 wholesales of 64,609 units, has posted marginal growth of 2% YoY (FY2024: 63,167 units, -10%). The Carens’ best fiscal was FY2023 when it sold 70,314 units. In early February 2025, the versatile and spacious MPV drove past the cumulative sales milestone of 200,000 units in the domestic market 36 months after launch.
The Carens is targeted at large families scouting for a premium, spacious cabin as well as day-to-day practicality, and a choice of multiple powertrains. I is likely that the somewhat slower sales of the model in FY2025 were due to the news that there is a new Carens, as well as an electric Carens, slated for launch later this year.
No. 4 – Maruti XL6: 37,111 units, down 18%
The XL6 is the heavily modified premium avatar of the Maruti Ertiga. This six-seater version of the Ertiga, billed as a proper alternative to India’s bestselling MPV, ticks the comfort and practicality boxes with ease. It is powered by the same 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine as in the Ertiga and offers the same automatic and manual gearbox options. However, while the Ertiga has hit its best-ever sales, the XL6’s numbers are down 18% YoY to 37,111 units in FY2025.
No. 5 – Toyota Rumion: 21,878 units, up 266%
The Rumion MPV is one of Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s successful products in the past two years. Since its launch in August 2023, the sensible, no-nonsense Maruti Ertiga-based people-mover, which is among the four rebadged Maruti Suzuki models in TKM’s portfolio, has made its presence felt in the affordable MPV market. Case in point is the 21,878 units sold in FY2024, up 266% YoY on a low year-ago base of 5,973 units,
The Toyota badge commands significant value in the Indian market, which buys into the brand's core ethics of high quality and durability over long-term usage. That a Toyota seldom disappoints, is cheaper to maintain over its competitors and also offers robust resale value, are reasons enough for buyers to be drawn towards the company's latest offerings, despite four of them being badge-engineered Suzuki versions.
In the case of the MPV segment, durability and reliability are the key customer demands that the Rumion fulfils adequately, just like Toyota's other people-movers like the Qualis of yesteryear and the Innova, which have established the carmaker's high-on-quality image in the Indian market.
No. 6 – Renault Triber: 19,905 units, down 11%
The seven-seater Triber SUV, which offers MPV versatility for hatchback money, with the base variant costing Rs 750,000 (on-road Delhi), continued to see a decline in its sales amidst fresher and newer rivals. Triber sales in FY2025 were down 11% YoY to 19,905 units.
What doesn’t help drive sales is the meek 1.0-litre petrol engine which develops 72hp and 96Nm of torque and comes paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard. The Triber has no diesel engine option, and also considering the value segment it is in, it does not have a factory-fitted CNG option engine either.
No. 7 – MG Windsor EV: 19,394 units, NEW MODEL
This MPV-styled eye-catching model has taken the passenger vehicle market, and in particular the EV segment, by storm in FY2025. Not only has the cool-looking product taken the battle into electric passenger vehicle market leader Tata Motors’ camp, but the tech-laden, spacious five-seater, all-electric MPV, which comes with a range of segment-first features, lounge-like seating and a lifetime battery warranty, has given a new charge to JSW MG Motor India’s sales. In FY2025, the MG Windsor EV sold 19,394 units, which propels it into No. 7 position with barely six months of sales.
No. 8 – Maruti Invicto: 4,036 units, down 12%
The Maruti Invicto MPV, which is produced by Toyota Kirloskar Motor for Maruti Suzuki under the global Suzuki-Toyota alliance, sold 4,036 units in FY2025, down 12% YoY (FY2024: 4,599 units).
Maruti Suzuki had launched the Invicto in July 2023. Like the Innova, it is big on space, comfort and features and sold with a strong hybrid-only engine, delivers impressive fuel economy.
Retailed from the premium Nexa channel, it is designed to tap the potential of the Rs 25-plus lakh MPV market albeit the strategy doesn’t seem to have clicked. Priced from Rs 29.39 lakh to Rs 33.57 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), the Invicto’s FY2025 sales of 4,036 units are down 12% YoY (FY2024: 4,598 units), which takes the MPV’s total sales over 21 months to just 8,634 units.
No 9 – Kia Carnival: 1,361 units, NEW MODEL
Launched in October 2024, the Kia Carnival (Limousine) builds on the legacy of its predecessor, the Kia Carnival, while offering enhanced features aimed at redefining passenger comfort. A key highlight is the second-row powered relaxation seats, which provide ventilation, heating, and leg support to ensure a comfortable experience for passengers.
Notwithstanding the high sticker price of Rs 75.62 lakh (on-road Delhi), the Carnival has sold 1,361 units in the last six months of FY2025. The large diesel-engined MPV scores high on comfort and flexibility and goes all out to pamper its occupants to the hilt.
No. 10 – Toyota Vellfire: 1,155 units, up 189%
Proof that even a very high sticker price for an MPV cannot dissuade buyers is the ultra-luxurious Toyota Vellfire. Priced at Rs 1.38 crore (on-road Delhi), the XL-sized MPV has sold 1,155 units – 755 additional units than FY2024’s 400 units.
The Vellfire houses a cavernous cabin that’s home to some of the best seats. A sister product to the more luxuriously appointed Lexus LM, the Vellfire is powered by a 193hp, 240Nm, 2.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol-hybrid powertrain mated to an e-CVT.
