Even as the popular Honda Activa continues its reign as the top-selling two-wheeler in India in June 2017, arch rival Hero Splendor is fast catching up. While the Activa sold 234,767 units last month (+3.56%), the Splendor was bought by 219,103 owners (+7.08%).

In June 2016, the difference between the two best-selling brands was 22,077 units as against 15,664 units in June 2017. In May 2017, Activa sales led Splendor sales by 46,646 units.

Rural buying is largely dependent on good monsoons, which define the sentiments across the regional markets. The sales of two-wheelers, particularly of commuter motorcycles, are one of the early indicators of market direction during and after the monsoon season.

Being the largest manufacturer and retailer of motorcycles in India, Hero MotoCorp is a conventional beneficiary of a good monsoon season. It is during these months that sales of its commuter motorcycle models traditionally register a sales spike.

Likewise, the Hero HF Deluxe, which continues to seal the third best-selling two-wheeler spot, has sold 154,655 units in June 2017, up by 45.24 percent YoY. Beating Honda’s CB Shine in the 125cc executive commuter motorcycle segment, Hero’s Glamour has risen to the fourth rank in the list with sales of 78,889 units in June 2017. Model’s YoY performance, however, is down by 1.82 percent.

Hero’s popular Passion brand remains at the fifth spot with sales of 76,605 units in June 2017, down by 0.04 percent YoY. The Hero Passion, which was once the second largest selling motorcycle brand in India, has lately seen a decline, as a result of aging models and the absence of new model additions. Sources say that the company is working to reinforce new life into the Passion portfolio of motorycles.

Honda’s 125cc CB Shine stands as the sixth largest selling two-wheeler for June. It sold 69,108 units last month, down by 6.97 percent YoY. The model had ranked seventh in June 2017. On the back of new promotional activities for the CB Shine SP, Honda expects that the sales of its executive commuter motorcycle models will grow in the coming months.

TVS Motor’s evergreen moped, the XL Super stands at the seventh spot in the Top 10 list with sales of 65,302 units in June. However, on the YoY basis, moped sales are down by 12.64 percent.

Nevertheless, TVS Motor’s top-selling scooter model, the 110cc Jupiter continues to deliver solid performance fetching consistent and reliable growth to the company. The TVS Jupiter is eighth best-selling two-wheeler with sales of 60,570 units in June 2017. The popular scooter model grew by a remarkable 31.26 percent YoY.

Royal Enfield’s bestseller, the Classic 350 returns to the Top 10 list and ranks ninth with sales of 42,149 units in June.

Hero’s 110cc Maestro becomes the fourth scooter brand (after the Activa, Dio and Jupiter) to enter this list. It occupies the last slot with sales of 38,822 units in June. The Honda Dio, which ranked tenth in May 2017, is out in June due to decline in its sales numbers.
