FY2025 proved to be a red-letter fiscal for the Indian scooter industry. Not only did it achieve best-ever wholesales of 6.85 million units (68,53,214 units), up 17% year-on-year (FY2024: 58,39,325 units) but a little-known fact is that it was also the best-ever fiscal for export of made-in-India scooters.
As the decadal scooter export sales data table as well as the OEM-wise statistics for FY2025 reveal, Indian scooter manufacturers dispatched a total of 569,093 units in FY2025, up 11% YoY (FY2024: 512,347 units). It was the second fiscal in a row that this segment of the two-wheeler industry had surpassed the half-a-million-export sales milestone.
FY2025 with 569,093 units is the best-ever fiscal for scooter exports, with the half-a-million milestone being surpassed for the second year in a row.
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), which has a stranglehold in the domestic scooter market, continued its dominance of the export scooter market with shipments of 311,977 units. This translates into strong 35% YoY growth – an additional 80,662 units over FY2024’s 231,315 units.
Interestingly, a Honda model which is no longer sold in India, continues to deliver the goods on the export front which, to some extent, would be helping amortise the costs the company had invested in developing this made-in-India product. This is the Honda Navi, which offers the convenience of a scooter and sports the looks of a motorcycle.
HMSI’s exports in fY2025 comprised three scooters – the Honda Navi (launched at Auto Expo 2016 and discontinued in India in CY2020), the Activa and the Dio. The 110cc Navi, with 143,583 units, was Honda’s – and India’s – most exported scooter in FY2025, up 24% YoY. The Navi was first launched in India and did benefit from some initial sales success but it failed to sustain that demand and was eventually discontinued. Nevertheless, the Navi has a strong resonance in the export market and helps Honda maintain its dominance.
Interestingly, in its three years in the US market, the Honda Navi is understood to have become one of the best-selling two-wheelers there. In the USA, the Navi is currently sold for $2,099 (Rs 174,000) albeit it is restricted to the city due to its low top speed and finds use as a user-friendly urban runabout. The Navi also witnesses healthy demand in Latin America.
Honda with 311,977 units between the Navi, Dio and Activa accounted for 55% of all the scooters exported from India in FY2025.
The Honda Dio (127,366 units, up 91%) is second on the Top 10 scale, and is followed by the Activa. India’s best-selling scooter however is ranked lower down (No. 5) in export demand, with 41,026 units (down 1%).
The 125cc Yamaha Ray, with 68,231 units exported and strong 68% YoY growth, is ranked No. 3, and is followed by the TVS NTorq 125 (64,988 units) which registered flat exports.
The 125cc Suzuki Burgman clocked exports of 33,803 units (FY2024: 61,679 units), which sees it drop down to sixth position from fourth in FY2024.
The TVS Jupiter, the company’s best-selling scooter in India, is ranked No. 7 on the export scale. The 19,504 units were down 67% YoY (FY2024: 59,262 units) pulling it down from fifth rank it had in FY2024.
With 18,707 units, the Hero Maestro is ranked eighth on the scooter export ladder-board, down 30% YoY and is followed by the 125cc Suzuki Avenis (9,291 units, down 14%).
The Hero Xoom wraps up the Top 10 list with 8,322 units, up by nearly 250% YoY on a low year-ago base.
OEM-wise, while Honda has three scooters in the Top 10 list, while Suzuki, TVS Motor Co and Hero MotoCorp have two each and Yamaha one.
