Top 10 Two-Wheelers in January 2016
Honda’s Activa range of scooters has once again grabbed the best-selling two-wheeler spot in India, beating the Hero Splendor in January 2016.
Honda’s Activa range of scooters has once again grabbed the best-selling two-wheeler spot in India, beating the Hero Splendor in January 2016. Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) reported sales of total 210,123 units of the Activa models as against the Hero Splendor’s sales of 199,345 units in January.
Notably, in the last six months (August 2015 – January 2016), the Honda Activa brand has retained the top spot three times – in August, October and January. This hints at the penetration of the scooters in Tier 2 and further into the smaller towns.
Talking to Autocar Professional recently Abdul Majeed, partner, automotive, Price Waterhouse (PwC India), said: “The scooter market continues to grow. The scooters offer flexibility for each member in the family and this is one of the major reasons behind their acceptance across the urban markets in India. However, I am now seeing that they are getting acceptance in the rural regions also, which are the key pockets for motorcycle demand.”
At the third and fourth positions are the other two commuter brands from Hero MotoCorp – HF Deluxe and Passion with sales of 107,272 units and 80,261 units respectively. Sales of the Hero Passion have picked up during January as the brand is seen to have registered a growth of 44 percent over December 2015.

HMSI’s 125cc executive commuter motorcycle, CB Shine, held the number five spot with sales of 76,562 units. On the other hand, Hero Glamour, CB Shine’s rival in the 125cc category, recorded sales of 63,009 units and held the sixth rank in the top 10 bestselling two-wheelers’ list.
TVS’ XL Super moped held the seventh spot with sales of 53,849 units in January. Hero’s Maestro scooter brand, which sold 48,002 units, ranked eighth in the list.
At the ninth spot is Bajaj Auto’s popular Pulsar brand, which has made its way back into the list after a month. It registered total sales of 46,314 units in January. The Pulsar was last seen in the top 10 list in Novemer 2015 when it held the eighth spot with sales of 49,281 units.
However, Bajaj CT, a consistent model in the bestselling two wheelers’ list, failed to make its mark in January 2016. It sold 32,890 units during the month.
Retaining its position TVS’ popular 110cc scooter Jupiter ranked 10th in the list. The model fetched sales of 42,838 units to the company in January.
