Sales of the Top 10 best-selling two-wheelers in India for December 2015 clearly reveal the shrinking volumes of the popular models.

While all the best-selling models have been hit by falling demand, some of the worst-hit two-wheelers include Hero’s Passion range, Honda’s CB Shine, Bajaj’s Pulsar range and the CT100.

Even the top-selling brands – Hero MotoCorp’s mass commuter motorcycle brand Splendor and Honda’s Activa – have seen a fall in their respective month-on-month sales numbers. For December 2015, Hero’s Splendor range sold a total of 184,856 units, down by 14.08 percent YoY (December 2014: 215,161).

Hero’s Splendor range managed to outsell the Honda Activa brand of scooters by a thin margin of close to 10,000 units. The Activa registered total sales of 174,154 units last month, down by 3.72 percent YoY (December 2014: 180,879).

At number three is Hero’s 97.2cc commuter motorcycle Deluxe, which sold 93,451 units in December 2015. The model, which comes with a starting ex-showroom, Delhi price tag of Rs 42,200, fared better than its December 2014’s sales of 78,343 units.

The fourth best-selling slot has a new model which has been raking in stable sales over the last few months. TVS’s most affordable offering, and also the smallest in terms of engine displacement, the two-stroke, single-cylinder, 70cc XL Super has ranked fourth in the Top 10 best-selling two-wheelers for December 2015. The model that comes under the moped category (engine capacity less than equal to 75cc with fixed transmission) sold 56,521 units in December 2015.

While the high-mileage XL Super sells well in the rural pockets of the southern and western India, the company had recently added a 100cc variant to the XL series. The TVS XL 100 currently sells only in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand. While the TVS XL Super costs Rs 26,857 (ex-showroom, Delhi), the XL 100 comes with a price tag of Rs 29,128 (ex-showroom, Lucknow).

Hero’s popular Passion brand of commuter motorcycles, which stood at the fifth position, clocked sales of 55,765 units in December 2015. The sales of this brand declined by 34.2 percent or by 28,988 units in value terms YoY. The falling sales of Passion brand has been one of the major concerns for Hero MotoCorp of late.

At sixth position is Hero’s Maestro range of scooters, which are faring well with stable sales. The company sold 52,084 units of the Maestro scooter last month.

The seventh-placed two-wheeler is Honda’s 125cc bestseller, CB Shine which sold 51,047 units, down by 18.25 percent YoY (December 2014:  62,439).

Hero MotoCorp’s Glamour range ranked eighth for December 2015 with sales of 48,748 units. TVS’ 110cc best-selling scooter model Jupiter continues to score well despite the fall in overall sales. The model sold 47,217 units for December 2015, and ranked ninth in the list.

Bajaj Auto’s most affordable offering, the CT100 commuter motorcycle sold 34,480 units and came last in the Top 10 best-selling two-wheelers list for December 2015.
