Rs 40,000 crore being spent on accident-prone sights to reduce road accidents: Nitin Gadkari: ANI

Union Minister of Road and Transport Highways, Nitin Gadkari said that the government is spending Rs 40,000 crore for removing black spots, or accident-prone sights, on roads, in an interview with ANI.

He added that around five lakh road accidents are reported annually in the country and most people who lose their lives are typically in the age bracket of 18 to 34.

Talking of a few major reasons that are linked to road accidents, he stated that automobile engineering needs improvement,  including six mandatory air bags, better road engineering, traffic signals signage and underpass at strategic locations.

Gadkari went on to highlight that reducing road accidents needed cooperation from people, otherwise it would be difficult, adding that “human behavioural change regarding road safety is an important aspect.”
