Mercedes-Benz G 400d launched in India at Rs 2.55 crore
Deliveries for the G 400d are expected to begin from Q4 of CY23.
Mercedes-Benz has introduced the updated G-Class line-up in the Indian market. The new G 400d replaces the popular G 350d, which was launched in 2019. Prices for the 2023 Mercedes G 400d start at Rs 2.55 crore (ex-showroom) which is Rs 83 lakh more than the outgoing G 350d. Bookings for the G400d have opened at Rs 1.5 lakh. With the new G-Class, Mercedes continues with its focus on the top-end of the luxury vehicle segment for India.
Mercedes G 400d: specifications and performance
First up, the G 400d gets the 330hp version of the 3.0-litre, OM656, in-line six-cylinder diesel engine, up from 286hp on the outgoing G 350d. It generates 700Nm of torque at 1,200-3,200rpm, up from the 600Nm of its predecessor. Power is transferred to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission and the G 400d does the 0-100kph sprint in 6.4 seconds, one second quicker than the outgoing model.
The G 400d continues to be underpinned by a traditional ladder-frame construction and gets a special G-Mode replete with its off-road driving setup. It comes with 241mm ground clearance and water wading capability of up to 700m.
Mercedes G 400d: variants and features
The G 400d has been introduced in India in two versions, both with starting prices of Rs 2.55 crore (ex-showroom).
Apart from the AMG Line, there's a new G 400d Adventure Edition that has been specifically designed for India, says Mercedes-Benz. It gets four exterior paint shade options – all from the brand's G Manufaktur range of special options. These include Desert Sand non-metallic, Vintage blue non-metallic, Travertine beige metallic and South Seas blue metallic. Apart from these, customers can select from 25 paint shade options that are available on the G 400d line-up.
The Adventure Edition comes with 18-inch, 5-spoke silver alloy wheels, a roof rack and a rugged spare-wheel holder, a removable ladder, a tailgate-mounted full-sized spare wheel, and a multi-function steering wheel with Nappa leather.
On the other hand, the G 400d AMG Line gets signature AMG styling cues on the outside with unique 20-inch, multi-spoke alloy wheels and a few other variant-specific equipment. It also gets a sliding sunroof, a Burmester sound system and 64 colours ambient lighting, among other features.
Mercedes G 400d: India delivery timeline, rivals
Deliveries for the G 400d are expected to begin in the last quarter of this year. Bookings are currently open and existing Mercedes-Benz customers are given first preference. The G 400d will continue to rival the popular Land Rover Defender and the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 in the Indian market.
