Mercedes-Benz India has launched the CLE Cabriolet at Rs 1.1 crore (ex-showroom). It debuted globally last July, but is only available as a convertible in India.

The new CLE is based on Mercedes' Modular Rear Architecture (MRA) platform, shared with the current C-Class and the upcoming new-generation E-Class. This makes it longer than the old C- and E-Class coupes. The CLE borrows styling cues from the outgoing E-Class coupe and cabriolet: a large grille with a shark-nose effect, a long bonnet, and an automatic, multi-layered fabric hood that folds neatly into the boot. In the Indian market, it comes in AMG Line trim that adds a few sportier bits like the bumpers.

Inside, it features the same layout as the C-Class, including a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 11.9-inch portrait-style infotainment display. It has a 2+2 seating layout with newly designed front seats that include headrests, heating, and four-way lumbar support as standard. Mercedes says the CLE is its first Cabriolet ever with separate head airbags for rear passengers as standard. It claims the CLE's soft top opens and closes within 20 seconds, up to speeds of 60kph.

The CLE Cabriolet has been brought to India in the 300 form, which means it features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system, delivering 258hp and 400Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 9-speed torque converter automatic as standard. Mercedes claims the CLE Cabriolet can sprint from 0-100kph in 6.6 seconds, before topping out at 250kph.

Despite the two additional rear seats, the CLE Cabriolet faces competition from the BMW Z4, which is priced at Rs 90.90 lakh. It is also a slightly affordable alternative to the Porsche 718 Boxster.
