Maruti Suzuki Forecasts Over 7 Lakh CNG Vehicle Sales in FY26

India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL), has projected a robust rise in its compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle sales, estimating over 7 lakh units to be sold in FY26, up from 6.2 lakh units in FY25 — a growth of nearly 12.9% year-on-year.

According to MSIL Chairman R.C. Bhargava, the strong demand for CNG-powered cars will remain a key driver for the company in FY26. “Our CNG car sales in India reached over 6 lakh last year, and this year we’re expecting to cross 7 lakh,” he said.

With CNG vehicles accounting for 34% of its overall sales in the last fiscal, Maruti Suzuki has maintained its dominant position in the segment.

In FY25, India’s CNG passenger vehicle market continued its upward trajectory, with total sales reaching 787,724 units. The growth highlights the increasing preference for cleaner and cost-effective mobility solutions, particularly among price-sensitive buyers. While Maruti Suzuki retained a dominant lead, other automakers also made significant gains in the segment. Tata Motors recorded a sharp 50% year-on-year increase in CNG vehicle sales, reaching 139,218 units in FY25. The share of CNG models in its overall portfolio also rose, with penetration climbing to 25%. Hyundai Motor India, too, witnessed growing traction for its CNG offerings. CNG vehicles accounted for 13.2% of its domestic sales in FY25, up from 11.4% in the previous fiscal.

This rising adoption across major OEMs indicates a strong and sustained demand for CNG-powered vehicles, driven by affordability and growing consumer awareness around fuel economy and emissions.
