Mahindra opens new EV manufacturing and battery facility in Chakan
The EV manufacturing unit features advanced automation technologies, including over 1,000 robots and automated material handling systems.
Mahindra has inaugurated a new electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing and battery assembly facility at Chakan plant in Pune. This dedicated facility is part of Mahindra's broader initiative to produce Electric Origin SUVs and expand its role in sustainable mobility solutions.
The new facility is located within the company’s 2.83 square kilometer Chakan manufacturing hub, one of India’s largest greenfield projects. Designed with sustainability in mind, the Chakan hub is water-positive and fully powered by renewable energy. Mahindra has allocated Rs 4,500 crore of its Rs 16,000 crore investment plan for FY22 to FY27 to support EV operations, including powertrain development, software and technology, and expanded manufacturing capacity.
The EV manufacturing unit features advanced automation technologies, including over 1,000 robots and automated material handling systems. The facility places emphasis on skill development and aims to achieve a 25% gender diversity ratio, reflecting Mahindra’s focus on inclusivity and readiness for future challenges.
The battery assembly line at the Chakan plant is designed to produce high-performance batteries using advanced manufacturing processes. It employs automated systems and patented designs to ensure safety, efficiency, and durability. The batteries undergo rigorous end-of-line testing under simulated real-world conditions to ensure reliability and performance.
With this initiative, Mahindra underscores its commitment to the "Make in India" program while contributing to India’s sustainability goals, including meeting its COP26 targets for 2030. This development aligns with the company’s vision of fostering innovation and supporting India’s transition to electric mobility.
Founded in 1945, the Mahindra Group operates in over 100 countries, with a significant presence in sectors such as farm equipment, utility vehicles, information technology, and financial services. It is the world’s largest tractor manufacturer by volume and continues to expand its footprint in renewable energy, logistics, and other industries. Through its initiatives, Mahindra aims to drive positive change and support community development worldwide.
