Hyundai Motor India Reaches 12.7 Million Sales Mark in 29-Year Journey
With US $6 billion invested since establishment, the company prepares to expand manufacturing capacity with new Talegaon facility.
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) marked its 29th foundation day today, announcing total sales of over 12.7 million units since its establishment on May 6, 1996. The company has invested US $6 billion in its Indian operations to date and exported more than 3.7 million vehicles to over 150 countries, establishing itself as one of India's largest automotive manufacturers.
The celebration comes as HMIL allocates INR 1,500 crore toward revamping its Chennai manufacturing facility and prepares to commence operations at its new Talegaon plant in Maharashtra in Q4 2025. The expansion aims to achieve a cumulative annual production capacity of 1 million units.
"Envisioning India at the heart of global manufacturing and commerce, Hyundai began its journey with the country 29 years ago with a vision of mutual progress," said Mr. Unsoo Kim, Managing Director, Hyundai Motor India Limited.
"Today, we take immense pride in how far we have come - not just providing smart mobility solutions, but a future that reflects innovation, sustainability and a deep connection with our customers. Guided by our global vision of 'Progress for Humanity,' HMIL will continue to drive transformation in products and services, while contributing meaningfully to the society," he added.
HMIL's journey began with the groundbreaking of its Sriperumbudur manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu, which started operations in September 1998 as Hyundai's first integrated car manufacturing plant outside South Korea. The facility has since become a hub of manufacturing excellence and a benchmark in green manufacturing practices.
The company remains one of the top three contributors to Hyundai Motor Company's global sales, accounting for 18.5% of worldwide volumes in calendar year 2024.
Through its corporate social responsibility arm, Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF), the company has invested INR 400 crore over the past five years in community initiatives organized under the pillars of Earth, Mobility, and Hope. These programs have positively impacted over 2 million lives annually and generated income benefits exceeding INR 40 crore for local communities.
As HMIL enters its 30th year of operations in India, it continues to focus on delivering advanced mobility solutions while supporting national development.
