Hyundai CoE Launches Ideathon, Research Synergy Forum In India

Hyundai Motor Group has launched the Hyundai CoE Mobility Innovation Ideathon and Research Synergy Forum, bringing students, faculty members and researchers from seven Indian universities together around future mobility technologies and in-vehicle experiences. The initiatives are part of the Hyundai Centre of Excellence (Hyundai CoE), established in 2025 as a collaborative research platform with academic institutions in India.

The Hyundai CoE network comprises IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) Nagpur and Tezpur University. Hyundai says the programmes are intended to expand industry-academia collaboration across mobility research, talent development and idea generation.

The Mobility Innovation Ideathon will run from September to early December 2026 under the theme ‘Enhanced In-Vehicle Experience’. Students from the seven member universities can submit concepts addressing Indian mobility requirements and changing customer lifestyles.

Hyundai CoE Mobility Innovation Ideathon Categories

The competition will focus on four areas: India-Smart Interaction; AI-Powered & Digital In-Vehicle Experience; Next-Generation In-Vehicle Interface; and Smart Value Innovation. The themes reflect the convergence of artificial intelligence, digital technologies, software-defined vehicles, user experience and personalised mobility services.

Each participating university will conduct an initial screening of submissions, with preliminary winners scheduled to be announced on October 30, 2026. The selected teams will then take part in an offline semi-final evaluation by Hyundai Motor Group judges.

Seven finalist teams will present their ideas during the final scheduled for December 16, 2026. Hyundai Motor Group plans to distribute approximately INR 10 lakh in prize money across the seven finalist teams, with the jury selecting the grand prize winner.

Hyundai CoE Research Synergy Forum

Alongside the student competition, Hyundai CoE will conduct the Research Synergy Forum, a faculty-focused programme for research exchange between Hyundai researchers and professors from the participating universities. The forum will cover areas including batteries, electrification and future mobility.

The forum is intended to facilitate the exchange of research outcomes and identify potential areas for collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group's R&D divisions. The company said the initiative will broaden the Hyundai CoE's industry-academia engagement beyond individual research projects to areas including talent discovery, idea generation and research networking.

Bijaya Ketan Panigrahi, Professor of Electrical Engineering at IIT Delhi and Hyundai CoE Co-Chair, said the ideathon is intended to bring student ideas into discussions around the Indian mobility market and customer requirements. Chang Yeon Cho, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor India Engineering, said the company intends to develop the programme as an industry-academia channel connecting Indian talent with Hyundai Motor Group.
