Tom von Bonsdorff: "The S60 Polestar is a racing car that you can use every day of the year, be it track or city roads."

Volvo Cars has launched the fastest car it has have ever made – the new S60 Polestar – in India.

Polestar, the performance brand owned by Volvo Cars, is the quickest car from Volvo’s stable. The car accelerates from 0-100kph in 4.7 seconds and is limited to a top speed of 250kph, powered by a specially-enhanced version of Volvo’s award-winning four-cylinder Drive-E powertrain.

Polestar has taken an original S60 and added a bigger turbo, a supercharger, new conrods, new camshafts, a larger air intake and a higher capacity fuel pump to augment the engine, and matched it with a BorgWarner four-wheel drive system and the new Polestar-optimised eight-speed Geartronic automatic gearbox. Despite this new performance-optimised equipment, Polestar has reduced the car’s weight by 20kg compared to the previous model years.

The new Volvo S60 Polestar comes is priced at Rs 52.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The sporty sedan comes in three colours – Rebel blue, Onyx black and Ice white – and is available for deliveries across Volvo cars dealerships in India starting today.

“This car is remarkably quick,” said Tom von Bonsdorff, managing director, Volvo Auto India. “But it is more than that. It combines Polestar’s 20 years racing pedigree with Volvo’s inherent pragmatism and engineering heritage. It is a racing car that you can use every day of the year, be it track or city roads.”

”While used vastly in different areas, this car shares more than just technology as compared to the track car. The core philosophy is the same, developed by people with the same passion. It is about creating performance that can be used in all situations, no matter if it’s about winning a championship or being able to enjoy a safe, functional and fun-to-drive car all year,” Tom von Bonsdorff added.

”All changes made to the car are about improving drivability and efficiency. The base of the new engine carries motorsport technology with solutions like the combination of turbo and supercharger, lightweight materials and more. This works hand-in-hand with our core philosophy and has enabled us to evolve the Volvo S60 Polestar,” said Henrik Fries, vice-poresident, R&D, Polestar.

High on safety
Like all Volvos, this car too is laden with safety technologies. Volvo Cars says “The safest sedan in its segment just became safer.”

According to the company, “The recent delicensing of certain frequencies of radar enables us to introduce our Radar based safety features in India. The S60 Polestar is equipped with radar and with inputs from camera it activates an array of pre-emptive safety functions. These include Adaptive cruise control, Lane departure warning, Collision Warning with full auto-braking for Pedestrians, Cyclists, other vehicles and large animals, Blind-spot detection with Cross Traffic Alert, City Safety and Park Pilot Assist.

Apart from the radar-based safety, the car is equipped with an array of passive safety systems – a strong safety cage, seat-belt pre-tensioners, side impact protection and whiplash protection. In all it is the safest sedan in its segment with a 5-Star Euro NCAP rating, says Volvo.
