Diesel prices have gone through the roof, with the Mumbai motorist having to shell out Rs 68.69 for a litre of diesel. Here's knowing more on the top 10 diesel-engined, most fuel-efficient cars you can buy in India. The fuel efficiency statistics in terms of kilometres per litre (kpl) are as per the Automotive Research Association of India.
1. Maruti Swift Diesel – 28.4kpl

The new Swift Diesel is powered by the 1.2-litre engine that produces 75hp of power. It retails at a starting price of Rs 704,000 (on-road Mumbai).
2. Maruti Dzire Diesel – 28.4kpl

Powered by the same 1.2-litre engine as the Swift, the Dzire sedan is available in the showrooms at a starting price of Rs 771,000 (on-road Mumbai).
3. Maruti Ciaz Diesel SHVS – 28.09kpl

The 1.2-litre engine, aided by Suzuki's SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) technology develops 90hp and still returns similar fuel efficiency as that of the Dzire. Slotted in the premium segment and sold through the Nexa channel, the price of the Ciaz Diesel starts from Rs 11.54 lakh (on-road Mumbai).
4. Maruti Baleno Diesel – 27.39kpl

Carrying the same engine from the Dzire, but tuned a bit differently for a different experience in performance, the diesel variant of the Baleno hatchback has a starting price of Rs 789,000 (on-road Mumbai).
5. Honda Jazz – 27.3kpl

With a 100hp, 1.5-litre engine, this diesel hatchback has a starting price of Rs 870,000 (on-road Mumbai)
6. Tata Tiago Diesel – 27.28kpl

With a starting price of Rs 497,000 (on-road Mumbai), this is the most fuel-efficient offering from Tata Motors. This hatchback is powered by a 70hp, 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine.
7. Maruti Ignis Diesel – 26.8kpl

This midsize hatchback is powered by a 75hp, 1.2-litre engine and comes at a starting price of Rs 760,000 (on-road Mumbai).
8. Ford Figo Diesel – 25.83kpl

The most fuel-efficient offering from Ford India has a starting price of Rs 703,000 (on-road Mumbai). This hatchback has a 100 hp 1.4-litre engine; its Figo Aspire sibling has the same mileage figures.
9. Honda Amaze Diesel – 25.8kpl

The Amaze sedan is powered by the same engine as the Jazz hatchback, but comes with a starting price of Rs 816,000 (on-road Mumbai).
10. Honda City Diesel – 25.1kpl

Bearing the same i-DTEC 100hp, 1.5-litre engine, the premium urban sedan comes with a starting price of Rs 13.14 lakh (on-road Mumbai).
