zingbus to Deploy 50 Electric Buses in 2026, Targets 1,000 by 2030

Intercity bus travel company zingbus has announced plans to deploy 50 electric buses across key corridors this year, with a long-term target of operating 1,000 electric buses by 2030.

The deployment represents one of the more significant electrification initiatives in India's intercity travel sector, which has traditionally relied on diesel-powered fleets. Unlike urban electric bus programmes that have gained traction in recent years, long-distance intercity routes have seen limited EV adoption by private operators.

To facilitate the initial rollout, zingbus has entered into a partnership with Drivn for electric bus leasing. The company says this asset-light model will allow it to scale its EV operations while maintaining focus on route expansion and service delivery.

"Electric travel should not be limited to short city rides," said Prashant Kumar, CEO of zingbus. "Intercity buses move people across states, families, and livelihoods every single day. Electrifying this segment creates a far greater environmental impact."

According to the company, internal customer feedback indicates that electric buses have received higher ratings for comfort and ride experience, attributed to factors such as smoother acceleration, reduced noise levels, and less vibration during long journeys.

The electric buses will be deployed on high-demand corridors where charging infrastructure is available and routes are operationally mature. zingbus has partnered with Jio BP to ensure access to charging stations along selected routes.

The company states that its EV services will maintain existing standards, including onboard amenities, trained staff, live tracking, and customer support.

The 2030 target of 1,000 electric buses would mark a substantial shift in the company's fleet composition. zingbus has outlined a strategy that includes gradual replacement of diesel buses on suitable routes while managing service reliability and cost efficiency.

The announcement comes as India's transport sector faces increasing regulatory attention on emissions reduction and clean mobility adoption. The intercity bus segment serves millions of passengers annually across the country.
