ZF Friedrichshafen AG and BMW Group have entered into a contract for the supply of drive components intended for electric and hybrid vehicle platforms. The agreement covers production and development work scheduled to begin in the coming years.
The partnership will focus on components for battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid systems. ZF will supply transmission systems and related drive technology parts to BMW manufacturing facilities. The contract includes provisions for collaborative development of future drivetrain solutions.
A key component of the agreement involves ZF's 8-speed automatic transmission, which has become a standard in the automotive industry. The transmission offers improved fuel efficiency compared to earlier designs by reducing engine rpm at highway speeds.
BMW Group sources components from multiple suppliers as part of its procurement strategy. The company operates production facilities across several countries and maintains supply agreements with various technology partners. ZF, headquartered in Friedrichshafen, Germany, manufactures transmissions, steering systems, and chassis components for the global automotive industry.
The agreement follows industry trends toward electrification of vehicle fleets. Several manufacturers have announced plans to increase production of battery electric and hybrid models. Supply chain partnerships between automakers and component suppliers have become more common as companies work to meet emissions regulations and market demand for electric vehicles.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The companies did not specify production volumes or provide details about which vehicle models would incorporate the components. Both ZF and BMW declined to comment on the timeline for commercial production.
ZF employs approximately 150,000 people globally and reported revenues of 38.3 billion euros in 2023. BMW Group sold 2.25 million vehicles worldwide in 2023 and has announced targets to increase its share of electric vehicle sales in the coming years.
