Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast will enter India’s electric two-wheeler market in the second half of 2026 with “India-specific electric scooters”, while simultaneously building out a dedicated two-wheeler manufacturing line with a long-term capacity target of one million units, Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast Asia, told Autocar Professional.

Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast will enter India’s electric two-wheeler market in the second half of 2026 with “India-specific electric scooters”, while simultaneously building out a dedicated two-wheeler manufacturing line with a long-term capacity target of one million units, Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast Asia, told Autocar Professional.
The two-wheeler programme will be housed at VinFast’s Tamil Nadu facility, where the company is expanding infrastructure to support a separate production line for electric two-wheelers, distinct from its passenger vehicle operations. “We definitely will come with two-wheelers in 2026, starting with scooters. These scooters are being developed specifically for the Indian market,” Chau said, adding that India-focused product development is already underway.
The entry of VinFast comes at a time when legacy players like TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, and Hero MotoCorp have grabbed the majority share from the start-up companies that had kicked off the electric two-wheeler revolution in the country. TVS and Bajaj are the top two EV two-wheeler companies, with Ather in third place at the end of 2025, while Ola slips off the podium in a highly competitive market.
Chau said VinFast’s decision to lead its two-wheeler entry with India-specific electric scooters is based on detailed market research conducted over the past year, which highlighted the need to tailor products to Indian riding patterns, road conditions, daily commuting distances, and price sensitivity, rather than adapting global models.
Two-wheeler Focus, Long-term Growth
While VinFast’s four-wheeler plant is being ramped up toward an annual capacity of 150,000 units, Chau said that the two-wheeler business is being planned on a much larger scale over the long term. “For two-wheelers, we are aiming big. The long-term vision is around one million units of capacity. That is not for year one, but it reflects how seriously we view India,” he said.
The company did not disclose timelines for achieving peak two-wheeler capacity or the investment required for the scooter production line.
VinFast’s entry into the two-wheeler segment in India will begin with electric scooters designed specifically for local usage patterns, road conditions, and customer expectations, rather than global carryover products. The move comes as India’s electric two-wheeler market enters a phase of consolidation, with established domestic manufacturers strengthening their positions after a period of rapid expansion driven by start-ups.
Localisation and Supplier Engagement Underway
Chau said VinFast is already in discussions with Indian suppliers to localise components, including batteries, to bring down costs and improve competitiveness.
“Local manufacturing is a must if you want to reduce the bill of materials. We are already engaging with Indian vendors, and some have visited our factory,” he said.
The company is also evaluating eligibility for government incentive programmes, such as PLI and PM E-DRIVE, depending on the scale and timing of new investments.
VinFast’s two-wheeler foray is part of its wider “green mobility ecosystem” strategy for India, which includes local manufacturing, an expanding dealership and service network, charging infrastructure through V-Green, and future mobility services.
Chau reiterated that India is a long-term strategic market for the group rather than a short-term expansion play. “We don’t launch everything at once. We move step by step. One product every six months,” he said.
