Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer VinFast is introducing its VF 6 B-segment SUV to address a gap in Europe’s electric vehicle market. The company’s strategy contrasts with the focus of many automakers, who prioritise the more profitable C and D segments of EVs.
The B-segment, which includes subcompact cars, is Europe’s second-largest automotive market, accounting for 27% of all vehicle sales in 2022. Despite its size, EV options in this segment remain limited. A French study found fewer than 20 available EV models in the B-segment, compared to 40 in the C-segment and 25 in the D-segment.
According to a report by Boston Consulting Group, the expansion of EV adoption in Europe depends on affordable options within the B-segment. However, the higher costs associated with EV technology have led manufacturers to focus on larger, higher-margin models.
VinFast, listed on Nasdaq, seeks to position itself as a competitive brand by offering affordable and feature-rich EVs. The VF 6 follows the VF 8 SUV as the company’s second model in the European market. VinFast aims to attract consumers with its pricing, product features, and after-sales policies.
The VF 6 features a design developed by Torino Design, combining a sloping roofline with sharp LED headlights to give it a modern and dynamic appearance. Inside, the cabin emphasises ergonomic functionality. The traditional mechanical gear lever is replaced by an electronic selector, and the dashboard design creates a spacious feel.
The VF 6 also incorporates a multi-link rear suspension system, designed to provide a smooth ride on uneven roads while enhancing the vehicle's handling and agility. The 150 kW electric motor generates 330 Nm of torque, delivering performance that supports efficient operation and responsive driving.
VinFast highlights the VF 6’s instant torque delivery as a key feature, offering smooth performance compared to conventional gasoline-powered vehicles. This capability aims to enhance the driving experience and safety in various conditions.
With a focus on modern design, advanced technology, and affordability, the VF 6 seeks to provide an attractive option for consumers in Europe’s B-segment EV market. Through this model, VinFast aims to contribute to the region’s growing adoption of electric mobility while reinforcing its presence in the industry.
