Uber enhances driver experience in India with new features focused on safety

Uber unveiled a range of new features aimed at enhancing the experience of its drivers in India. These initiatives focus on safety, fairness, and convenience, with the goal of improving day-to-day operations for Uber’s large driver base.

With over a million monthly active drivers in India, Uber aims to make driving with the platform a more rewarding and efficient experience. In support of the government’s Code on Social Security (CoSS) for gig workers, Uber has promoted registrations on the e-Shram portal, a unified database for gig and unorganised workers. To encourage participation, Uber is offering cash incentives to the first 10,000 drivers who register on the portal.

Prabhjeet Singh, President of Uber India & South Asia, stated that Uber is focused on offering flexible work, enhanced safety, and greater convenience. He noted that the new updates will help elevate the driver experience.

Uber has introduced several safety measures based on driver feedback. The Helmet Selfie feature prompts two-wheeler drivers to take a selfie with their helmet on before starting a trip. This feature, currently in the final testing phase, is set to roll out nationwide early next year.

The Women Rider Preference feature allows female drivers to choose to accept only female riders, which is particularly useful during late hours. This feature has already facilitated over 21,000 trips, enabling female drivers to prioritize safety and extend their working hours.

Additionally, drivers can now record audio if they feel uncomfortable or unsafe during a trip. The recordings are encrypted and not accessible unless the driver submits them as part of a safety report. This feature complies with India’s one-party consent law and is available nationwide.

The Upfront Tipping feature allows riders to add a tip before the trip begins, which encourages drivers to accept requests promptly. This feature benefits both riders, by increasing their chances of securing a ride, and drivers, by boosting their earnings.

Uber’s Instant Payments system enables drivers to access their earnings within five seconds, offering greater flexibility than the typical industry standard of up to three times a week. This allows drivers to cash out up to four times daily.

A new Mentorship program pairs new drivers with experienced drivers who can provide guidance on app functionality and market understanding. Drivers with over 7,000 trips, a rating of 4.8 or higher, and Uber Pro diamond status are eligible to mentor newcomers. Mentors receive compensation for their support.

The revamped Earnings Hub offers a clear breakdown of drivers' weekly earnings, showing the portion of fares that go to Uber, local government taxes, and tips, which are fully paid to drivers.

Finally, Uber has introduced the Deactivation Review Center, which allows drivers to view actions taken on their profiles and appeal decisions. Uber reviews each appeal carefully, and over 5,000 drivers have been reinstated following legitimate appeals.

These new features demonstrate Uber’s continued commitment to improving the safety, transparency, and convenience for drivers, with the company prioritizing driver feedback to make the platform better.
