Two-wheeler retail in India rose 33.08% year on year to 17,90,188 units in September 2026, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Retail also increased 4.41% month on month from 17,14,610 units in August.
September was the segment’s best-ever September, with retail now 15.3% above the previous September peak recorded in 2018. Two-wheelers accounted for the largest share of India’s overall vehicle retail during the month, which stood at 25,36,920 units.
The year-on-year increase was broadly even across rural and urban markets. Rural two-wheeler retail grew 33.11%, while urban retail increased 33.06%. On a month-on-month basis, however, urban retail grew faster at 5.29%, compared with 3.62% growth in rural markets.
Two-Wheeler EV Retail Share Reaches 11.58%
FADA said dealers reported festive purchases during the first half of September, steady rural and semi-urban demand, increased interest in premium motorcycles and rising EV adoption. These factors were partly offset by purchase deferments during Shraadh and supply shortages of fast-moving models.
Electric two-wheelers accounted for 11.58% of September retail, up from 10.68% in August and 8.17% in September 2025. Petrol/ethanol-powered two-wheelers accounted for 88.35%, while CNG/LPG models accounted for 0.07%.
Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India recorded 4,68,789 units and a 26.19% retail market share in September. Hero MotoCorp followed with 4,34,280 units and 24.26%, while TVS Motor recorded 3,64,640 units and 20.37%. Bajaj Auto accounted for 9.28% with 1,66,112 units.
Two-Wheeler Retail Up 20.43% In FY27 YTD
For April-September 2026, two-wheeler retail stood at 1,10,43,407 units, compared with 91,69,815 units during the corresponding period of FY2026. This represents 20.43% year-on-year growth.
FADA expects two-wheeler booking-to-retail conversion to strengthen in October, supported by auspicious festive days, rural cash flows, easier financing and continued EV interest. The association also flagged OEM supply of fast-moving models, October price increases and rainfall-deficient areas as factors to watch.
