TVS Motor Company crossed the five lakh mark in August, posting total sales of 5.09 lakh for the month, including around 18,000 three-wheeler sales. Out of the 4.91 lakh two-wheeler sales, the domestic market accounted for 3.67 lakh.
The company said it sold 222,296 scooters, and 221,870 motorcycles. This reflects broader consumer preferences shifting toward urban mobility solutions, with scooters posting 36% growth compared to motorcycles' 30% increase over August 2024.
The five lakh milestone has long been considered a benchmark for Indian two-wheeler manufacturers. TVS Motor's achievement comes during a period when the Indian scooter industry achieved record wholesales of 6.85 million units in FY2025, up 17% year-on-year, underscoring the segment's robust momentum.

The crossover moment between scooters and motorcycles signals a fundamental shift in market dynamics. Scooters have gained traction in urban markets where ease of use and fuel efficiency drive purchasing decisions. The 36% surge in scooter sales to 222,296 units outpaced motorcycle growth significantly.
This trend aligns with industry-wide patterns, as Honda retains its first position followed by TVS, Suzuki, Hero, Yamaha, Bajaj and Ather in the overall scooter market rankings.
International business emerged as a critical growth engine, with total exports jumping 35% to 135,367 units. Two-wheeler exports specifically grew 36%, highlighting TVS Motor's expanding global footprint amid intensifying competition in overseas markets.
However, electric vehicle sales remained relatively flat at 25,138 units compared to 24,779 units in August 2024. The company attributed this to ongoing magnet availability constraints that continue to affect production capabilities.
Three-wheelers delivered the strongest segment performance with 47% growth to 18,748 units, reflecting recovering commercial vehicle demand across key markets.
The August performance establishes TVS Motor as a significant player in India's evolving two-wheeler landscape, where urban mobility preferences increasingly favor scooters over traditional motorcycles.
The contrast with industry peer Bajaj Auto highlights TVS Motor's momentum in August. While TVS Motor surged 30% to cross the five lakh milestone, Bajaj Auto managed 5% growth to 417,616 units, falling short of the half-million mark despite being a larger manufacturer. Bajaj's domestic two-wheeler sales declined 12% to 184,109 units, underscoring the divergent trajectories of India's two-wheeler companies during this growth period.
The export performance reveals contrasting strategies and market positioning. Bajaj Auto's two-wheeler exports grew 25% to 157,778 units, while TVS Motor achieved 36% export growth to 121,926 units. Although Bajaj maintains higher export volumes, TVS Motor's growth rate suggests gaining momentum in international markets. Furthermore, Bajaj's domestic sales dropped 8% to 232,398 units, while TVS Motor posted 28% domestic two-wheeler growth, indicating stronger resonance with Indian consumers during the festival season buildup.
