Hybrid push intensifies as company eyes diversified powertrain mix; currently, the Renault Duster is not available in a CNG variant

Renault has hinted at the possibility of introducing turbocharged CNG powertrains in India, signalling a potential shift from conventional approaches in a segment that has largely relied on naturally aspirated engines.

In an interaction with the media, Francisco Hidalgo, Vice President – Sales & Marketing, Renault India, suggested that CNG offerings need not be restricted to low-performance configurations.

“I don’t see why CNG would have to mean naturally aspirated… There can be turbo CNG,” Hidalgo said, without confirming any specific product plans. He was responding to a question from Autocar Professional on whether Renault is considering a naturally aspirated engine and CNG option for the Duster.

His comments come at a time when the CNG passenger vehicle market in India is beginning to evolve. While most offerings continue to be paired with naturally aspirated engines, Tata Motors has already introduced turbocharged CNG options, indicating early movement towards higher-performance CNG solutions.

Currently, Renault does not offer factory-fitted CNG variants in India. Instead, CNG options across its portfolio are available as dealer-level aftermarket fitments, highlighting a potential area for product expansion as demand for alternative fuels grows.

Alongside CNG, Renault is placing a strong bet on hybrids as a core part of its India strategy. “Hybrid is where I really feel that Renault can make the difference,” Hidalgo said, adding that the technology is emerging as a natural replacement for diesel, particularly in urban driving conditions.

He noted that customers transitioning from diesel tend to move towards hybrid solutions and are unlikely to revert, reinforcing Renault’s confidence in the technology amid tightening emission norms and shifting consumer preferences.

Renault’s broader powertrain approach reflects a diversified strategy rather than a single-technology focus. “I don’t think we are going to get into a mono-technology destination,” Hidalgo said, pointing to a spectrum of solutions including strong hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles.

While the company has developed a new multi-energy platform capable of supporting electrified powertrains, it is taking a calibrated approach towards EVs in India, aligning future introductions with market readiness and demand.

Renault has also indicated readiness for flex-fuel technologies, leveraging its experience in markets such as Brazil, further expanding its range of potential fuel solutions.

With regulatory pressures increasing and fuel choices diversifying, Renault appears to be positioning itself with a flexible powertrain roadmap for India, balancing performance, efficiency and affordability while leaving the door open for next-generation CNG innovations.
