Tractor retail sales in India were largely flat in August 2026, increasing 0.84 percent year on year to 87,977 units, according to FADA. The segment's August 2025 retail volume was 87,244 units. On a month-on-month basis, however, tractor retail fell sharply by 25.03 percent from 1,17,349 units in July.
FADA identified tractors as the clearest indicator of monsoon-linked rural stress in August. The association said the all-India rainfall deficit had widened to around 13 percent, while 14 states were short of rain.
The rural market nevertheless recorded a 3.09 percent YoY increase in tractor retail, while urban registrations declined 8.32 percent. Both markets saw substantial sequential declines, with rural retail down 24.43 percent and urban retail down 27.64 percent.
Tractor Retail Falls 25% Month On Month
August tractor retail stood at 87,977 units against 1,17,349 units in July. The 25.03 percent sequential decline was the largest month-on-month contraction among the major vehicle categories tracked in FADA's August release.
The data also shows the divergence between tractors and other rural-oriented vehicle segments. Rural two-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and three-wheelers all recorded YoY growth in August, whereas tractors increased by less than one percent.
Mahindra Leads Tractor Retail Market
Mahindra & Mahindra's tractor business recorded 20,703 units in August and held a 23.53 percent market share. Its August 2025 retail volume was 20,159 units, giving it a 23.11 percent share at the time.
Mahindra & Mahindra's Swaraj division recorded 15,914 units and an 18.09 percent share. International Tractors Limited followed with 11,818 units and a 13.43 percent share, while TAFE recorded 10,780 units and a 12.25 percent share.
Escorts Kubota's agri machinery business recorded 9,756 units and an 11.09 percent share. John Deere India recorded 6,294 units and 7.15 percent, while Eicher Tractors recorded 5,590 units and 6.35 percent.
Tractor Retail Outlook Remains Linked To Rural Conditions
FADA's broader outlook points to festive demand as a support for vehicle retail in September-November, but the association expects the impact of the monsoon on rural demand to remain an important factor. For September, 67.09 percent of surveyed dealers expected growth, while 27.35 percent expected a flat market and 5.56 percent expected de-growth.
For the September-November period, 81.62 percent of dealers expected growth. FADA identified the impact of a below-normal monsoon on rural demand as the second-largest risk cited by dealers, after festive demand underperforming expectations.
The August tractor data does not include Telangana. FADA said tractor registrations from the state were unavailable for the month and that its overall retail dataset was compiled in collaboration with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways from 1,467 of 1,469 RTOs.
