Toyota Kirloskar Motor Unveils Special-Purpose Hilux at Himtech 2024 in Leh

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) showcased a special-purpose Hilux at Himtech 2024 in Leh on September 20th, 2024. The event was organised by the Indian Army in collaboration with FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry) with the goal of promoting military technology for high-altitude areas. Attendees included senior officials from the Army, Air Force, ITBP, and representatives from TKM.

The Hilux, known for its 4x4 off-road capabilities, has been modified with the assistance of an authorised external vendor to meet the needs of the Indian Army. Toyota’s QDR (Quality, Durability, and Reliability) principles guided the development of these vehicles, designed to perform in challenging environments. TKM highlighted two modified versions of the Hilux at the event:

The Hilux Field Deployment Vehicle (FDV) is specifically designed for heavy-duty applications, having previously undergone successful trials with the Northern Indian Army Command. It is intended for tasks such as remote diagnostics, repairs, and transporting supplies and spare parts, making it suitable for demanding military operations. 

The Modified Hilux, on the other hand, is equipped with enhanced off-road capabilities, featuring upgrades such as specialised suspensions, tires, and a snorkel. These modifications enable the vehicle to navigate rough terrains effectively, ensuring reliability even in challenging environments.

Wiseline Sigamani, Vice President – Strategic Business Unit (North) at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, emphasised Toyota’s commitment to developing customised solutions for the unique requirements of organisations like the Indian Army. The modifications include features aimed at improving drivability on rough terrain, enabling patrolling, and supporting rescue operations.

The Hilux, which has been in production for over five decades and spans eight generations, remains a versatile vehicle suitable for a range of uses, including off-road driving, city commutes, and industries like agriculture, defense, mining, and construction.

Powered by a 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with both automatic and manual transmission options, it offers a 700mm water wading capacity, making it suitable for rugged conditions in India. The Hilux’s adaptability and low maintenance costs make it suitable for various applications, from business use to family needs.
