The Tata Punch reclaimed the top spot in India’s passenger vehicle sales rankings in August 2026, with 21,320 units sold. It was followed by the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R and Swift, with the top 10 models collectively recording 1,83,037 units up from 1,37,334 units in August 2025.
Nine of the 10 models posted year-on-year growth, with Maruti Suzuki accounting for six positions in the list. The strong annual growth comes against a relatively low base in August 2025, when buyers had deferred purchases and manufacturers had moderated dealer dispatches amid expectations of GST changes announced that month.

Punch Returns to the Top
The Tata Punch recorded its strongest showing among the listed models, with 21,320 units, nearly twice its August 2025 volume.
Its compact dimensions, multiple powertrain choices and ride and handling continue to be among its key strengths. The Punch competes with the Hyundai Exter and Citroen C3.
Maruti Suzuki Dominates the Top 10
Maruti Suzuki had six models in the August rankings. The Wagon R came closest to the Punch with 20,180 units, while the Swift followed with 19,832 units.
The Wagon R’s spacious cabin, easy driving characteristics and low running costs continue to underpin its volumes. The Swift, meanwhile, recorded a stronger 60 percent year-on-year increase, helped by its fuel efficiency and easy-to-drive nature.
The Fronx was Maruti’s fourth model in the top four, with 18,730 units. Its crossover styling and fuel-efficient powertrains remain key demand drivers.
The Ertiga was fifth overall with 18,516 units, effectively unchanged year on year, while the Dzire and Baleno rounded out Maruti’s representation at seventh and ninth positions respectively.
Tata Nexon Stays Close to the Leaders
The Tata Nexon finished sixth with 18,431 units, up 32 percent year on year. The figure includes both ICE and EV versions.
Its wide powertrain portfolio, spanning petrol, diesel, CNG and electric versions, gives it a broad market position. The Nexon competes with models such as the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Mahindra XUV 3XO.
Scorpio Posts Strong Growth
The Mahindra Scorpio was the final entrant in the top 10, recording 15,576 units. Sales were up 58 percent year on year, making it the third-fastest-growing model in the list after the Punch and Swift.
The figure combines sales of the Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic. The nameplate continues to draw buyers with its rugged character, strong engines and off-road capability.
Creta Remains Hyundai’s Sole Entry
The Hyundai Creta was eighth with 16,288 units, registering only a 2 percent year-on-year increase.
It was Hyundai’s only representative in the top 10. The SUV’s spacious cabin and long equipment list continue to support demand, despite higher prices for its upper variants.
What the August Rankings Tell us
The August rankings point to a broad-based recovery in volumes, although the 33 percent year-on-year increase needs to be viewed against the unusually weak August 2025 base.
Six of the 10 highest-volume cars came from Maruti Suzuki, Tata had two entries, while Hyundai and Mahindra had one each.
The Tata Punch’s return to the top is particularly notable, with its 99 percent year-on-year growth taking it just ahead of the Wagon R. Meanwhile, the Ertiga was the only model in the top 10 to remain effectively flat, while the Creta recorded only marginal growth.
