US automaker Tesla discussed with Indian officials, how it could be involved in domestic incentives in the country, pertaining to car and battery making, Reuters reported citing a person in the know.

The company has proposed establishing a factory in the country for EVs, besides locally making batteries here, the source informed Reuters.

This comes on the back of previous discussions between the automaker and the government ending in an impasse, after its request to reduce import tax on cars that can go up to 100 percent, was not taken into consideration. India wanted Tesla to build cars locally, whereas the auto firm wanted to test the waters first with imports, Reuters stated.

The company also spoke about the country’s import taxes in the latest round of discussions, but more from a perspective of getting to know the local rules for establishing a factory in the country, the person in the know informed Reuters on condition of anonymity.
