US firm Tesla is serious about setting up a manufacturing base in the country, India’s Minister of Information and Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar told Reuters. This comes a day after meeting with executives of the auto company.

Chandrasekhar said that Tesla was ‘very seriously considering India as an innovation and production base’, the newswire reported. He further added that India will make whatever ambitions or investment goals Tesla has in the country, a success, the newswire reported.

Tesla had evinced interest in establishing a factory for electric vehicles and making batteries, Reuters had earlier reported.

The Minister told the newswire that what Tesla would like to do in the country, was not for him to say. The auto company did not offer a timely comment to the newswire.

The discussions represent a change in stance after talks had hit a stalemate, where the auto company last year wanted a reduction in import taxes on cars that are as high as 100 percent, Reuters reported.
