Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD gets bigger battery, 661km range in India

The recently launched Tesla Model Y in India has been quietly upgraded with a larger battery pack, improving the electric SUV’s range which now stands at 661km instead of 622km (WLTP) on the earlier model.  Tesla Model Y prices for the upgraded model remain the same as earlier which starts at Rs 67.89 lakh.

Tesla Model Y gets more range: Here’s how

The range upgrade has been achieved thanks to a higher-capacity pack featuring the latest LG-sourced cells. The updated Model Y now uses an 84.2kWh battery, up from the previously specified 79kWh pack. The additional 5.2kWh of usable capacity comes courtesy of Tesla’s ongoing transition to LG’s newest chemistry, which offers better energy density and efficiency. This upgrade also brings the Indian-spec Model Y Long Range RWD in line with the latest international specification seen in select global markets, including parts of Europe.

While the power output figures remain unchanged, the slight increase in battery capacity could also bring marginal gains in real-world driving range, especially under mixed highway and urban conditions. Tesla’s energy management system, combined with its aerodynamic efficiency and regenerative braking calibration, has always helped the Model Y achieve excellent range figures in everyday use. With the larger pack, owners can expect even fewer charging stops on long-distance trips.

Interestingly, Tesla has made this enhancement without increasing prices, meaning customers who have already booked the Model Y Long Range RWD will automatically benefit from the newer battery.  The upgraded WLTP range figure of 661km for the Tesla Model Y comfortably exceeds that of the BMW iX1 (up to 475km)

With this upgrade, Tesla is clearly signaling its intent to offer Indian buyers the latest and most efficient tech from its global portfolio. For customers awaiting their deliveries, this quiet battery update comes as a pleasant surprise — more range, newer technology, and no price hike.

Tesla Model Y price in India

The Tesla Model Y in India is priced from Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base RWD version. The long-range RWD variant carries a premium, and reports suggest it is listed at Rs 67.89 lakh ex-showroom.
