Mercedes-Benz India Produces 200,000th Locally Manufactured Vehicle
German luxury automaker reaches manufacturing milestone at Pune facility as EQS SUV becomes the 200,000th vehicle to roll off Indian production line.
Mercedes-Benz India has produced its 200,000th locally manufactured vehicle at its Chakan facility near Pune. Dr. Jörg Burzer, Board Member for Production, Quality and Supply Chain Management at Mercedes-Benz Group AG, marked the occasion by rolling out an EQS SUV from the production line.
The milestone highlights accelerating production rates at the facility, with the company taking 19 years to produce its first 50,000 vehicles (1995-2014), while the most recent 50,000 units were manufactured in just over two years. Mercedes-Benz now produces 11 different luxury models at the Indian plant.
"Mercedes-Benz's remarkable milestone of 200,000 'Made in India' cars underlines India's potential as a key manufacturing hub in the long run," said Dr. Burzer. He noted the plant's ability to produce both internal combustion engine vehicles and electric vehicles under one roof.
The Pune facility has achieved several distinctions including being the first location outside Germany to produce a Mercedes-Maybach S500 in 2015. The plant began local production of electric vehicles with the EQS Sedan in 2022, followed by the EQS SUV 580 in 2024, positioning the company at the forefront of luxury electric mobility in India.
According to company officials, the facility has been powered entirely by renewable energy since 2022, aligning with Mercedes-Benz's global sustainable manufacturing strategy.
Mercedes-Benz has invested approximately INR 3,000 crores (about $360 million) in its Indian manufacturing operations to date, including a fresh investment of INR 200 crores ($24 million) in 2024. This represents the highest investment by any luxury automotive manufacturer in India.
The company maintains over 100 sales and service touchpoints across more than 50 Indian cities, the largest retail network among luxury carmakers in the country. This extensive presence allows Mercedes-Benz to deliver its locally produced vehicles to customers throughout India with standardized service.
Mercedes-Benz entered the Indian market in 1994 through a joint venture with Tata Motors before establishing its wholly-owned subsidiary in 2009. The company has consistently led the luxury vehicle segment in India, adapting its global models to meet local market requirements while maintaining international quality standards.
