Tata Motors Records 144 Commercial Vehicle Patent Filings in FY26

The automaker focused its intellectual property efforts on alternative powertrains

Tata Motors Ltd announced on April 29, 2026, that it filed 144 patent applications for its commercial vehicle division during the 2026 financial year. This marks the highest number of annual patent filings in the history of the company's commercial vehicle operations.

The recent filings align with the manufacturer's strategic focus on developing sustainable mobility solutions. The patent applications cover emerging technologies such as electric vehicles and hydrogen based internal combustion engines. The filings also target core commercial vehicle metrics including improved vehicle safety, operational reliability, optimized total cost of ownership, and occupant comfort.

Alongside the patent applications, the automaker expanded its broader intellectual property portfolio by filing 21 design applications and 35 copyright applications during the fiscal year. The company also received 15 new patent grants, bringing its cumulative total of granted patents to over 650.

Aniruddha Kulkarni, Vice President and Head of Engineering at Tata Motors, stated that the record filings reflect the technical capabilities of the company's engineering teams. He noted the automaker intends to continue utilizing its research and development resources to support the long term interests of its customers and the broader commercial mobility sector.
