Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Sales Rise 40% to 201,723 Units in July–September Quarter
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles reports record quarterly volumes, with EV sales up 90% to 47,150 units, while industry registrations grew about 24% year-on-year in the quarter.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. sold 201,723 units in domestic and international markets in the second quarter of FY27 (July–September), up 40% from 144,397 units in the same quarter last year. The company said it was its highest-ever quarterly sales figure.
Domestic sales were 196,674 units, up 40% from 140,189 units. International business sales rose 20% to 5,049 units from 4,208 units.
In September alone, the company sold 70,210 units, up 15% from 60,907 units in September 2025. This was the first time the company's monthly sales crossed 70,000 units, according to Managing Director and CEO Shailesh Chandra. Domestic sales in the month were 68,810 units, up 15%, and international sales were 1,400 units, up 13%.
Electric vehicle sales, which include those of the subsidiary Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited, reached 47,150 units in the quarter, up from 24,855 units a year earlier, a 90% increase. September EV sales were 15,384 units, up 67% from 9,191 units. The company said EVs made up 23% of its sales in the quarter, against about 8% for the industry.
CNG models also recorded their highest quarterly sales and accounted for 28% of volumes, the company said. EVs and CNG together made up 51% of its sales.
Chandra said industry volumes on the Vahan registration portal grew about 24% year-on-year in the quarter, which he described as seasonally softer. He attributed demand to the effect of GST 2.0, the revised goods and services tax rates that took effect last year, and to growing adoption of greener powertrains. The company said the Punch was India's highest-selling SUV during the quarter.
The company launched or introduced the Curvv SeriesX, the Sierra Legend Series and the Tata Aeris during the period. It also introduced a new customer-facing identity, TATA.CARS. Chandra said the company has a strong order book for the festive season and is increasing production to meet demand.
The year-ago comparison base was weak for part of the quarter. Tata Motors' passenger vehicle sales fell 7% year-on-year in August 2025, in line with other major carmakers, whose shipments fell 6% to 12% that month. Speculation that the government would cut GST on cars from 28% to 18% led buyers to defer purchases and dealers to reduce orders.
The company's August 2026 sales were 67,753 units, up 56% from 43,315 units a year earlier. EV sales that month were 16,549 units, up 94%, and its Vahan market share was 14.7%.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, part of the Tata Group, was formerly Tata Motors Ltd. Its name changed on October 13, 2025, under a Composite Scheme of Arrangement approved by the National Company Law Tribunal's Mumbai bench. It is listed on the BSE (500570) and the NSE (TMPV).
