Tata Motors and Castrol India Limited have signed a memorandum of understanding to launch a pilot programme aimed at building a structured, traceable system for the collection, storage and channelisation of used engine oil.
Under the arrangement, Tata Motors' authorised sales and service touchpoints in Karnataka will function as designated collection points for used oil generated during vehicle servicing. Castrol India will be responsible for channelising the collected oil to registered recyclers, drawing on its lubricant expertise to maintain quality and traceability through the recycling process.
The companies said the initiative addresses a long-standing gap in the management of used oil, which is classified as hazardous waste, and represents a step toward a more organised recycling ecosystem in the automotive sector.
Vikram Agrawal, Head–Spares and Non-Vehicle Business at Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles, said responsible used-oil management is central to building a circular automotive ecosystem in India, adding that the partnership links collection at service touchpoints to high-quality re-refined output.
Anoop Jindal, Vice President–B2B (OEM) Sales at Castrol India, described the tie-up as the company's first OEM collaboration focused on structured used-oil management in the country. He noted that learnings from Castrol's earlier used-oil collection pilots in southern India had informed the design of the new programme, and that the partnership with Tata Motors' service network could help create a more organised and scalable model going forward.
The MoU builds on the existing relationship between the two companies and aligns with their respective sustainability goals — Tata Motors' broader push into electric and CNG mobility, and Castrol's strategy of incorporating recycled materials into its lubricant products.
Tata Motors is part of the Tata Group and is listed on the BSE and NSE. Castrol India, part of the bp group, has operated in India for 115 years and runs three blending plants supplying a network of more than 150,000 retail outlets.
