Tata Motors, one of India’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers, has introduced 10 new trucks and buses in Sri Lanka in collaboration with Diesel & Motor Engineering PLC (DIMO), its authorized distributor in the country. The launch marks a significant expansion of Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle portfolio in Sri Lanka and coincides with the 65th anniversary of its partnership with DIMO.
The newly launched vehicles are designed to serve a range of applications across cargo and passenger transport sectors. The lineup includes models tailored for urban logistics, long-haul freight, inter-city travel, and staff transportation, aiming to meet diverse operational demands in Sri Lanka’s evolving transport landscape.
The cargo-focused models include the Ultra series — T.7, T.9, T.12, T.14, and 1918.T — positioned for intra-city and last-mile delivery operations. Built on a next-generation platform, these trucks emphasize fuel efficiency, maneuverability, and operational productivity. For heavy-duty and long-distance freight, the Prima 5530.S and Signa 5530.S prime movers feature enhanced engine performance, improved fuel economy, and advanced safety systems aimed at supporting large-scale logistics and infrastructure projects.
On the passenger transport side, the LPO 1622 Magna bus is designed for inter-city travel, offering air suspension for improved ride comfort and electronic stability control for enhanced safety. Meanwhile, the Ultra Prime LPO 8.6 and LPO 11.6 buses, with seating capacities of 34 and 40 passengers respectively, are targeted at corporate and institutional staff transport, focusing on fuel efficiency, reliability, and ease of maintenance.
The launch event was attended by senior executives from both companies. Girish Wagh, Executive Director at Tata Motors, highlighted the company’s focus on application-specific vehicle design and its confidence in the Sri Lankan market. “These new models are developed to align with the growing demands in infrastructure, logistics, and public transportation in Sri Lanka,” he said. “With an emphasis on performance, durability, and cost efficiency, we believe these vehicles will support improved operational outcomes for businesses.”
Ranjith Pandithage, Chairman of DIMO, emphasized the longevity and strength of the partnership with Tata Motors, which dates back to 1960. “Over the past 65 years, we have worked closely with Tata Motors to bring reliable and technologically advanced commercial vehicles to Sri Lankan customers,” he said. “This latest range reflects current market needs and is supported by our nationwide service infrastructure to ensure long-term vehicle performance and customer satisfaction.”
To support the expanded vehicle lineup, DIMO offers a network of 15 service centers across Sri Lanka, providing access to genuine spare parts and maintenance services. Additional customer support includes extended warranty options of up to three years or 300,000 kilometers on select models, as well as Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMCs) customized to different operational requirements.
Tata Motors currently exports commercial vehicles to over 40 countries and offers a wide product range, from sub-one-tonne mini trucks to 60-tonne heavy-duty trucks, along with passenger vehicles seating between 9 and 71 passengers. The company has over 70 years of experience in commercial vehicle manufacturing, with a focus on durability, efficiency, and cost-effective solutions.
The introduction of these 10 new models underscores the continued growth of Tata Motors’ presence in Sri Lanka and reinforces the strategic role of its long-standing partnership with DIMO in the region’s commercial transportation sector.
