Tata Motors continues to maintain its commanding lead as the country's largest electric passenger vehicle manufacturer, even as rivals Mahindra & Mahindra and JSW MG Motor are rapidly closing the gap between them and the market leader.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd sold 4,708 electric vehicles in June 2025, up from 4,351 units in May 2025, representing an 8.21% month-on-month increase. The company's annual growth stood at 2.48%, showing steady momentum in the electric vehicle segment despite increased competition.
While Tata's growth rate appears conservative compared to other players, the company's substantial market share demonstrates its established position in India's EV landscape, built on popular models and extensive charging infrastructure partnerships.
JSW MG Motor India Pvt Ltd secured the second position with 3,972 electric vehicle sales in June 2025, demonstrating consistent performance with a 5.50% month-on-month increase from May's 3,765 units. The company showed robust annual growth of 168.38% from 1,480 units in June 2024.
Mahindra & Mahindra's electric vehicle sales witnessed strong growth, with 3,029 units sold in June 2025 compared to 2,632 units in May 2025, marking a strong 15.08% month-on-month increase. Year on year, sales surged by 523.25% from 486 units in June 2024.
The growth reflects the company's successful start to its born electric SUVs, which started selling earlier this year.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd sold 512 electric vehicles in June 2025, though this represented a 15.51% decline from May's 606 units. However, the company's annual transformation has been exceptional, with sales jumping from just 63 units in June 2024 - a remarkable 712.70% year-on-year growth, attributable to Creta EV.
BMW India Pvt Ltd recorded impressive growth in the luxury electric vehicle segment, with 275.44% year-on-year growth, selling 214 units in June 2025 compared to 57 units in June 2024. The German luxury automaker also showed strong month-on-month growth of 22.99%.
Mercedes-Benz AG similarly demonstrated solid performance with 95.83% year-on-year growth, selling 94 electric vehicles in June 2025 versus 48 units in the previous year.
The electric vehicle market showed mixed signals, with some manufacturers facing headwinds. PCA Automobiles India Pvt Ltd experienced a significant decline of 66.39% year-on-year, while Volvo Auto India Pvt Ltd saw a 54.17% decrease in annual sales.
Kia India Private Limited bucked the trend with substantial growth of 156.25% year-on-year, selling 41 units in June 2025 compared to 16 units in June 2024.
The total electric passenger vehicle market in India reached 13,178 units in June 2025, representing a healthy 79.95% year-on-year growth from 7,323 units in June 2024. Month-on-month, the market grew by 7.10% from May's 12,304 units.
FADA President, Mr C S Vigneshwar, commented on the June 2025 EV auto retail data: "Electric mobility is gathering unprecedented momentum across all segments, underpinned by the PM eDrive Scheme's mandate to make electric vehicles more accessible and affordable. In June 2025, electric 2W commanded 7.3% of the market—up from 5.8% a year ago—demonstrating growing consumer confidence in EV technology. Electric 3W now account for over 60% of all 3W sales, cementing their role in last-mile connectivity, while PV EV penetration rose to 4.4% and electric CV doubled to 1.56% YoY. By expanding charging infrastructure and fostering domestic innovation, this visionary initiative is driving record EV sales nationwide and charting a path to a cleaner, smarter, and self-reliant mobility future for India."
The data indicates that India's electric vehicle market is experiencing robust growth across multiple segments, with passenger vehicles showing particularly strong momentum. As charging infrastructure expands and government policies continue to support electric mobility, the competition among manufacturers is expected to intensify further.
