Tata Electronics has begun pilot activity at its semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad, Assam, as the ₹27,000 crore project moves closer to full-scale operations.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on October 3 that the first clean room at the facility was ready and production of what he described as “pilot chips” had begun. The facility is expected to be formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2026 or January 2027.
The Jagiroad facility is an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test, or OSAT, operation focused on the back-end stages of semiconductor manufacturing rather than wafer fabrication. Tata Electronics has said the facility will focus on Wire Bond, Flip Chip and Integrated Systems Packaging technologies.
The facility is designed for a capacity of up to 48 million semiconductor units per day. Automotive is among its key target sectors, alongside communications, IoT and artificial intelligence.
Qualcomm Automotive Modules To Be Made At Jagiroad
Its automotive focus is set to include Qualcomm Automotive Modules. Tata Electronics and Qualcomm Technologies announced in February that the modules would be manufactured at Jagiroad for Indian and global automakers.
Qualcomm Automotive Modules integrate Snapdragon Digital Chassis system-on-chips with other system components into production-ready modules. They are aimed at applications including digital cockpits, infotainment, connectivity and intelligent vehicle systems. Qualcomm says the modular approach can simplify system design and accelerate development timelines as automakers move towards software-defined vehicle architectures.
Tata Electronics And Nexperia Partnership At Jagiroad
Tata Electronics has also expanded its semiconductor relationship with Nexperia. Under a partnership announced in September, the companies plan to collaborate on the assembly and testing of Nexperia’s discrete semiconductor products at Jagiroad.
Jagiroad OSAT Vs Dholera Fab: What Is The Difference
Separately, Nexperia and Tata Electronics are laying the groundwork for production of Nexperia’s MOSFET portfolio at Tata Electronics’ upcoming 300mm semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat.
The distinction between the two facilities is significant. While Jagiroad provides semiconductor packaging, assembly and testing capabilities, Dholera is being developed for front-end wafer fabrication, giving Tata Electronics a presence across multiple stages of the semiconductor manufacturing value chain.
