The Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) has announced a partnership with Relux Electric Private Limited to establish 500 electric vehicle charging stations across the state, marking a significant expansion of Tamil Nadu's EV infrastructure.
The collaboration, announced on September 24, 2025, will begin with a feasibility study to identify suitable government-owned lands for the charging stations. The initiative is part of Tamil Nadu's broader strategy to position itself as an electric mobility hub while reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation.
Relux Electric, which describes itself as India's leading EV charging infrastructure provider, will work alongside the state-owned TNGECL to implement the project. The company currently operates in six states including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh.
"This collaboration between the state and Relux comes at the right time to accelerate EV adoption in Tamil Nadu," said Karthikeyan S., Managing Director of Relux Electric Private Limited. He noted that the project would help transform Tamil Nadu into an electric mobility hub and create opportunities to strengthen charging infrastructure at customer-friendly locations.
Tamil Nadu currently operates approximately 1,300 EV charging stations. The state is developing a digital mapping system to help users locate nearby charging points and plans to establish dedicated EV hubs with public-friendly facilities.
TNGECL, formed in February 2024, emerged from the merger of the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) with the renewable energy division of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO). The corporation was established to accelerate the state's green energy initiatives and aims to make Tamil Nadu a renewable energy leader by 2030.
The partnership represents part of TNGECL's broader strategy to expand EV infrastructure through collaborations with municipal bodies, bus depots, and other public locations. The initiative aims to deploy charging stations in strategic locations to make EV charging more accessible to the public.
Relux Electric operates under what it calls an end-to-end charging services model for both private and public sectors, following government guidelines. The company also offers an entrepreneurial business model allowing individuals to start their own charging stations with what it terms a "100% investment guarantee."
The 500 new charging stations are expected to significantly boost Tamil Nadu's EV infrastructure capacity as the state works toward its sustainable transportation goals.
